AHS girls skate to week-ending split

John Marshall goalie Sarah Manguray was again great in goal against Austin, stopping 26 of 27 shots in a 4-1 Rockets victory Friday night at the Rochester Recreation Center.

The Packers (12-9, 5-8) entered the game having won six of their previous seven contests, losing only to rival Albert Lea along the way. John Marshall, like Albert Lea, is one of the top three teams in the league.

Austin was also playing a road game for the second consecutive night. The Packers got back around midnight from their 6-5 win at Mankato East on Thursday.

Kati Radford-Garcia's first varsity goal was Austin's only offensive highlight in Friday's 4-1 loss to the host Rockets. Seventh-grader Taylor Jenkins assisted on the Packers' only goal.

"The girls did a good job, they skated very hard," said AHS coach Denny Bray. "We took three penalties and we killed them off."

John Marshall's leading scorer, Jodi Holland, bookended Radford-Garcia's goal with two of her own. Radford-Garcia broke Manguray's shutout 5:33 into the third period, but Holland made the win academic with her second goal coming with 40 seconds remaining. Holland has 35 goals so far this season.

Austin goalie Justine Wiste made a number of tough stops in the loss. Wiste saved 24 of 28 shots on goal.

The Packers remain on the road for their next game with a trip to Rochester Mayo scheduled for next Saturday at 8 p.m. Austin hopes to avenge a 4-1 loss to the Spartans in their first meeting Dec. 5 in Austin.

Vengeance is theirs

The Austin girls' hockey team got revenge of a 4-3 overtime loss to Mankato East with a 6-5 victory over the host Cougars Thursday night in Mankato.

Kristin Faber's fourth hat trick of the season surged the Packers over the top in another one-goal game against East. The Cougars scored two goals in 30 seconds midway through the third period to tie the score at 5-5, but Faber's third goal at 10:38 put the Packers over the top.

Austin left wing Courtney Hughes, the second-leading scorer on the team, did not play because of an illness. Emily Quealy moved up from her spot on the second line and contributed a goal and an assist in the Big Nine win.

Amy Snyder made 24 saves on 29 shots for her seventh win of the season.

All-Conference defenseman Jenny Nemitz dished out two assists, both on third-period goals by Faber. Grace Heimsness and Tracy Petersen both added goals for Austin, while Jessica Petersen, Taylor Jenkins and Faber all had one assist.

Through Friday's loss to JM, Faber leads the Packers with 26 goals and 16 assists for 42 points in 21 games. Hughes has 31 points in 20 games.
