Looking at the overall record of the Owatonna girls' hockey team can be a bit deceiving -- just ask the Austin Packers.
Despite a 5-5 mark entering Thursday night's Big Nine Conference clash with Austin, the host Huskies proved themselves to be more than a .500 team with a 10-0 shellacking of the Packers.
Austin (4-5, 2-5) was outshot 30-10 by Owatonna, who at 5-0 is one of two remaining undefeated teams in the Big Nine (John Marshall, 7-0). The Packers have now lost three straight.
"We just did not test their goalie too well," said AHS coach Denny Bray. "And our goaltending was not as good as we would have liked."
Eighth-grade goalie Amy Snyder survived two periods before giving way to sophomore Justine Wiste. Snyder left with Austin in an 8-0 hole, making 16 saves on 24 shots. Wiste made four saves on six shots.
Owatonna's Lindsay Macy ran her season goal-scoring total to 20 with a hat trick. Last year Macy racked up six and seven points in respective matches with Austin, totaling nine goals in two Owatonna routs.
"We only gave her three goals this time," Bray said. Macy led the state of Minnesota in scoring and total points as a junior for the Huskies.
The Packers play their first non-conference game since defeating Onalaska, Wis., in the finals of the Weyerhaeuser Tournament Nov. 30 when Austin visits Worthington for a 1 p.m. clash on Saturday. AHS is back home Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Faribault.
