New Life Academy of Woodbury broke open its one-point lead after the first quarter and chased down a 54-38 win over Lyle/Pacelli in the final round of the Randolph girls' basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles outscored L/P 18-7 in the second quarter and maintained the lead through the remainder. The loss was the third straight for Lyle/Pacelli after picking up its first win one week previous. L/P was led by Louise Mudra, who earned All-Tournament Team honors. She scored 12 points in the team's final game before the new year.

"It was 16-14 halfway through the second quarter, they called a time out, and they came out and just rattled off 10 straight," said L/P first-year coach Craig Smith. "And we didn't recover after that. We were just throwing the ball away."

Lyle/Pacelli (1-9) did not score in the final four minutes of the first half, falling behind by 12. New Life Academy went up by 20 after the third quarter and kept a considerable lead throughout the final period.

"Our offense was fine, except in the second half we just stopped attacking the basket," Smith said.

L/P closed to within 14 with a run midway through the third quarter but the Eagles scored the final six points of the period to pin down the win.

"Those six points were probably the most important points of the game," Smith added.

Anna Hebrink helped out with nine points, Lindsay Halbach added eight and Kristina Hollerud scored seven. Laura Christopherson rounded out the scoring with two points.

Lyle/Pacelli was 8-22 from the free-throw line and netted only two three-pointers. Hebrink and Halbach had one each.

L/P returns from the holiday break with its first game at Houston Jan. 9.

"I'm hoping we can at least do well in conference," Smith said. "Coming back we'll have our chance to get some wins in conference."
