Leave it to Mayo to end Austin's winning streak.
The Packer girls' hockey team had a three-game winning spree stopped by the Spartans Thursday night, 4-1, at Riverside Arena. Austin surrendered a pair of power-play goals and lost for the first time in its last four games.
Austin's only goal came at the 13:33 mark of the third period as Kristin Faber scored her team-leading 10th goal on an assist from Tracy Petersen. Petersen leads the Packers with five assists.
"The girls skated hard, I felt we outskated them the first two periods," said AHS coach Denny Bray. "We just couldn't get the puck in the net.
"We knew going in that we were going up against a very good goalie, we just couldn't get the rebounds in."
Austin outshot the Spartans 28-21, including a 7-2 advantage in the first period. Packer goalie Justine Wiste stopped 17 of 21 shots she faced in the eventual loss.
Mayo was called for six penalties to Austin's three, but the Packer power-play was 0-for-6.
AHS (4-3, 2-3) hosts Mankato East Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Arena.
