BPHS wrestlers sweep double dual

Blooming Prairie bolstered itself with two dual victories in a non-conference triangular hosting a pair of area wrestling teams Tuesday night.

Southland and Austin High went to Blooming Prairie for the Blossoms' premiere meet of the season. Austin and Southland, which hosts the Rebel Invitational Saturday in Adams, both went to tournaments in the opening weekend.

Packer coach Bill Kinney secured his 100th career win at Austin High during his team's stay at the Rochester Invitational Saturday at Century High School. Austin went 2-1 with a number of highlights, including T.J. Parlin moving into third all-time in mat wins for AHS.

Southland entered Tuesday's double dual coming off a strong fourth-place showing at the Mankato Loyola Tournament. The night before, the Rebels opened the season with a dual-meet victory at St. Clair in which 119-pounder Zach Stratton picked up his 100th career victory.

Blooming Prairie's balance and returning varsity experience, however, outweighed both Austin and Southland in identical 46-28 dual victories over its guests. In the first meet of the night, Austin edged Southland 36-31.

Southland's setback in both dual defeats came in the upper weights, where the Rebels are unable to fill roster spots. Southland forfeited the last three weight classes but won six of 10 matches wrestled against both Austin and Blooming.

"We were very fortunate to gain this win over an outstanding Southland squad," Coach Kinney said. "On paper, Southland had to be favored."

The Rebels lineup, though without anchors in the heavy weights, features three rated Class A wrestlers in the middle. Stratton is polled seventh at 125 pounds by The Guillotene, Pete Churchill is ranked ninth at 140, and Adam Landherr is third at 152. All three earned wins against their Austin opponents but none were able to put down pins.

Austin survived by saving team points and picking up wins in Kinney's key matches. Danny Rysavy (103) and Nate Granahan (112) both earned decisions. Granahan's victory was his first in a varsity singlet for AHS.

Austin and Blooming each piled up four pins against each other, but the Blossoms took two forfeits and won the other three matches in the final dual of the night.

"Overall it's very nice to get two wins under our belt," said Blooming coach David Pfiefer. "The kids looked pumped up and ready to go and there was a good crowd."

The Blossoms' rated wrestlers -- Grant Johnson, Steve Salinas (7, 160) and Jay Salinas (5, 215) -- all went 2-0 with a forfeit. Johnson, rated seventh at 112, won the highlight match of the night by posting a major decision over Southland's Stratton in the 119-pound bout.

"Blooming Prairie is a very fine wrestling team with talent spread out over the entire lineup," Austin's Kinney said. "We needed to win a couple of the early matches and they just didn't go our way.

"Our team is working on improving technique and eliminating errors. I am very pleased with the way we have wrestled early in the season."

Austin's Rysavy and top-rated T.J. Parlin (130) both ran their records to 5-0. The Packers go to Faribault tonight for a double-dual including Farmington.

Southland hosts the Rebel Invitational Saturday while Blooming Prairie attends the Coon Rapids.
