Waldorf dunks Devils

Waldorf College welcomed Riverland women's basketball coach Suzy Hebrink back to the bench with a second-half schellacking. The Vikings outscored Hebrink's Lady Blue Devils 60-16 over the final 20 minutes of a 102-50 win over Riverland Tuesday night in Forest City, Iowa.

"It was anything but pretty," said Hebrink, who returned to the sidelines after giving birth to a daughter two weeks ago. "I didn't know that was possible.

"They were bigger, faster and stronger. We didn't stop them at all."

Waldorf led by as many as 20 during the first half, but the Blue Devils battled to within eight, 42-34, before the halftime break. The Vikings, who moved to 7-2 this season, scored up a storm in the second half.

"We knew it'd be a tough game but I certainly didn't expect it to be so lopsided," Hebrink said. "We just didn't do our thing on offense. But even if your offense isn't working we can still play defense, and we didn't do that either."

Jenny Schnaufer led the Devils in scoring with 13 points, and Bridget Burzinski chipped in with 10.

"We have too many kids with too much talent not to be getting anything out of them," Hebrink said. "We just need to come back tough and to get better with each game.

"We need to find a way to jel a little bit."

Riverland takes a week-long break before going to Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa, on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

RIVERLAND -- Jenny Schnaufer 13, Hannah Tvedt 2, Becky Herrmann 2, Shelly Sorenson 7, Katie Berg 3, Tanya Jensen 9, Steph Vollbrecht 4, Bridget Burzinski 10.

Riverland lacks balance

The Riverland men's team had its short two-game winning streak snapped at Waldorf Tuesday night, 81-66.

Jake Bettis scored 27 points in a losing cause for the Devils, who are off until Monday's trip to Western Wisconsin. Riverland (2-2) defeated the Cavaliers 89-71 in their game previous to Tuesday's loss in Forest City.

Waldorf (5-4) had five players score in double figures. The Vikings led 38-34 at the half and Riverland closed to within two points, 40-38, right after the break. But Waldorf came back with consistent runs and Riverland could not keep pace.

"We didn't shoot it very well from the outside," said Riverland coach David Lillemon. "We had some open looks, we just couldn't get that basket when we needed it."

Riverland remained within 10 points throughout the second half until free-throws and easy baskets near the end widened the final score.
