Turnout at forum not a good sign

'Disappointed' is an understatement.

But it's the best word we can come up with after seeing the turnout -- or lack thereof -- at a recent public forum.

The event was designed to give local residents a chance to ask what they would like to see in a city administrator. Patrick McGarvey, Austin's current city administrator, will be retiring this spring. The city has hired a search firm to ask local leaders and citizens what attributes they would like to see in someone who would take McGarvey's place.

We're looking for someone who has continued vision toward economic development, along with someone who can achieve an effective and open dialogue with the county.

Neither are easy tasks. But both are essential to keep Austin growing into a prosperous area, and one that people will want to come to.

However, it doesn't help when give the opportunity, the public doesn't want to offer its insight and opinions on who they'd like to see in such an important position of leadership here.

We hope that if this opportunity arises again, we'll hear more from those who are willing to share their thoughts. Communication will be the key and will only help Austin get the most qualified candidates for a position that will have a tremendous impact on the city's future.
