Robert K. Bartels, 42
Robert Keith Bartels, age 42, of Austin, died of colon cancer on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
He was born July 22, 1960, in Hawarden, Iowa, to Allen and Mildred (Thompson) Bartels. He graduated from West Sioux High School in 1978. He graduated with a BS degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University in 1982. Bob moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1983, where he began working for the Hormel Foods Corporation. He married Joyce Thornton on Oct. 20, 1984, in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Austin, Minn. in 1995.
Bob was a wonderful husband and a truly loving father. Since the day of his diagnosis one year ago, he was blessed with continued health until the last weeks. Bob loved the simple pleasures of life. His enjoyment was being with his family, getting together with friends, woodworking, car racing, golf, and watching all sports. Bob loved the Iowa State Cyclones.
His death has added a star to the heavens but left an emptiness on Earth.
Bob was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin.
Memorials are preferred.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Andrew M. Lindahl and the Rev. Shari Mason officiating. Organist will be Darlene Berhow. Vocalists will be Jeannie King and Richard Flisrand.
Interment will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, Iowa. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10:30 a.m. with a memorial service following at Hawarden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dean Shelley officiating.
Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at the church one hour before the service.
Casket bearers will be Mike Vandertie, Brad Peterson, Ralph Thielking, Mike Mudd, Bill Moritz and Bill Buryanek.
He is survived by: wife, Joyce Bartels of Austin, Minn.; daughters: Mackenzie, Maggie, and Marissa Bartels, all of Austin, Minn.; mother: Millie Bartels of Hawarden, Iowa; sister and brother-in-law: Tina and Brad Peterson of Canton, S.D.; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ed and Betty Thornton of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Frances S. Dyrland, 94
Frances S. Dyrland, 94, died Oct. 31, 2002, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, Villisca, Iowa.
She was born Nov. 11, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Mary Ann and Martin Scepaniak. They later moved to Swanville, Minn., where the family farmed.
In 1931, she married Conrad Dyrland in Elmdale. They lived in Lyle, where Frances was a cosmetologist. In 1970, the couple retired and spent their remaining years in Little Falls, Bemidji, Blackduck, Minn. and Corning Iowa.
Survivors include daughter, Patricia (David) Reisinger, Corning, Iowa; sons, Richard (Sunni) Dyrland, Ridgefield, Wash.; Byron (Linda) Dyrland, Blackduck; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Lukens, Little Falls; sisters-in-law, Mildred (Glenn) Martin, Minneapolis; Hazel Moore, St. Ansgar, Iowa; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and six sisters.
Internment: At the Six-Mile Grove Cemetery in Lyle at a later date.
