Ethics code is a needed addition

Back in 1991, then-Gov. Arne Carlson issued an executive order for an ethics code.

The objective was to keep appointees and employees of the governor from using state time and/or equipment for personal benefit, and to keep them from getting perks that Joe Public wouldn't ordinarily receive.

Then Gov. Jesse Ventura was elected.

Not surprisingly, Ventura didn't keep the code going, although it was certainly his right to do that.

But we're pleased to hear that Gov-elect Tim Pawlenty will reinstate the ethics code.

Bringing integrity back to this office is important not just for this state, but for others throughout this country who view us. Implementing this code will only help improve the image of the governor's office.
