Small schools shut out of state cross country

No area runners qualified for the Class A state cross country meet after Thursday's Section 1 race at Northern Hills Golf Course in Rochester.
Blooming Prairie, Hayfield and Lyle/Pacelli all competed in the season-ending event. Lyle/Pacelli's Josh Gunderson, a freshman, led the way in the boys' race with a 19th-place finish in 18:20. Hayfield's Sara Halverson battled her way back from an injury to lead the local girls in 23rd.
L/P's Katie Boijsolie was 25th overall in a time of 16:56 -- her second-best time of the season. Senior Sammi Jones was 90th overall in 19:40.
Gunderson was nine places out of qualifying for state. L/P placed 13th as a team.
T.J. Parlin was 48th in 19:10, followed by Danny Rysavy in 78th in 20:10. Shawn Pfeil placed 94th in 21:02 and Jimmy McDermott was 108th in 23:05. The entire team returns for next season.
Hayfield was paced by Bryan Oelkers. The senior clocked in at 18:25 for 22nd place out of 110 overall runners. John Rasmussen was 47th and Josiah Krell was 67th. Brent Oelkers, Matthew Voltin, Noah Hamer and Kyle Kuster also competed for Hayfield, which finished 11th.
Blooming Prairie placed 10th, led by Luke Nelson's 31st-place time of 18:46. Zach Fogarty was 51st in 19:17, Doug Wencl was 68th in 19:57, and Matt Hagen was 71st in 20:02. Gary Tashima came in 82nd in 20:21, and Pat Winzenburg was 83rd in 20:23 to round out the Blossoms' effort.
Four runners -- Wencl, Tashima, Winzenburg and Ben Hansen -- graduate from the BPHS squad.
Hayfield junior Sara Halverson was unable to qualify for state for the fourth consecutive year, placing 23rd in 16:49. Kathleen Freiheit was next for the Vikings in 51st, and Heather Williams followed her home. Anna Taylor, Faith Rasmussen, Amanda Thoe and Sheryl West also came in for 11th-placed Hayfield.
Blooming Prairie was 13th as a team, led by Kari Peterson's 41st overall finish in 17:39. Seniors Tiffany Ingvalson and Sara Wonderlich were next (47th, 17:49; 55th, 18:05), with Stephanie Dierksen following up in 67th.
Lisi Ingvalson was 96th and Corinna Freese was 97th to round out the scoring efforts for BPHS. Chelsie Hansen was 105th overall.
