Barry Simonson's two terms as Mower County sheriff will end when 2002 expires.
Then, a new county sheriff will take over those duties.
Terese Amazi could make Minnesota sheriff history as the first woman elected to that post if she is the winner Nov. 5.
Her opponent, Austin police officer Todd A. Clennon wants the spot himself.
Here are the candidates' profiles in their own words:
Terese Amazi
Prior elective office experience: None.
Profession: Mower County Chief Deputy Sheriff.
Why are you seeking public office?
Long ago, I recognized that a leader can have a positive impact on an organization. Building on my experience with the department, I feel I can be an effective leader and wish to provide the best law enforcement services to the citizens of Mower County.
What is the top priority?
Jail over-crowding is the top priority. A jail is the largest liability a Sheriff has. With the jail population continually over maximum capacity, and the facility's limitations, liability increases.
How would you fix that
problem?
Jail overcrowding is in the beginning stages of being addressed. Prisoner bed space is presently being contracted through Mitchell County, Iowa.
A contract with Steele County has been sought. A jail consultant is projecting future jail populations and statistics, as well as costs of viable prisoner housing options.
What are your thoughts on public service?
The sheriff is the only law enforcement official elected by the public to serve all county citizens. For the past 14 years, I have provided the best public service I can. I will continue to serve Mower County, as well as to hire the best public servants possible.
I believe I possess the qualities and abilities to best serve all residents of Mower County as sheriff.
Todd Clennon
Prior elective office experience: None
Profession: Officer with the Austin Police Department
Why are you seeking this office?
I believe I possess the needed skills, knowledge and experience to provide Mower County with an excellent sheriff's department. I feel there are needed changes and want to be in a position to make those changes in order to provide the highest quality of life to the citizens of this county. I was also encouraged and supported by friends and relatives.
What is the top priority?
The current jail situation with its high population, overcrowding and staffing must receive focused attention in order to provide the maximum security of inmates and the highest degree of public safety.
How would you fix that problem?
The current jail is a liability. A jail study has been authorized and will give professional insight into possible remedies. I believe this should have been done long before it became an urgent situation and could possible have been prevented if the jail had been given more attention and involvement by the past administration. Why do surrounding counties already have facilities being constructed and Mower County is only in the planning stages? This procrastination is now costing taxpayers thousands of dollars in inmate transportation and temporary solutions. I will work closely with the professionals doing the jail study and the county board on solutions, be it a new facility or renovation of the existing one.
As for the assets of the jail we need look only as far as the correctional officers. I will provide them with as much support as I can and ensure the working conditions are the best possible under the current situation. I will ensure that safety and security in our jail is our top priority.
What are your thoughts on public service?
The public puts incredible trust and confidence in its law enforcement officers. We must always strive to hold their safety and concerns in the highest regards. We are here to protect and serve.
