The Austin swimming team took the experience it gained in Tuesday's defeat of Blake and put it to use in a Big Nine Conference victory over host Mankato West, 94-84, Thursday night.
The Packers, rated third in the state, scored victories in 10 of 12 events and got out of the blocks early to ensure the meet victory. Austin (10-2, 7-1) did not give the Scarlets a chance and led by as many as 36 points before wrapping it up on Beth Goskesen's individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke.
Goskesen also swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay, which opened the meet the way Austin expected to Tuesday against Blake -- with a win. Cassie Srock, Meghan Walsh and Lauren Goettsch swam their respective strokes in starting the Packers in the right direction.
Stacy Bjorlie followed with a win in the 200 freestyle and Austin was off to the races. The Packers won the next five events, highlighted by a pair of victories for Walsh. The senior scored wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, and she later contributed in the final Packer relay title (400 freestyle).
Goettsch paced the pack in the 50 freestyle, while Lindsay Lukes broke into the winners' circle with a victory ahead of Goettsch in the 100 free. Bjorlie was bounced back into the 500 freestyle, where she finished second.
Danielle Chapek had an easy time of taking the top spot in the diving competition, scoring 206.30 points with the nearest competitor more than 25 behind.
Senior sprinter Amanda Martin was a part of both winning freestyle relays.
The Packers host Rochester John Marshall for their final Big Nine meet Tuesday at Ellis. Austin ends the regular season Oct. 21 at Waseca.
