Dr. Edgar D. Bock, 81
Dr. Edgar Detlov Bock, 81, of Blooming Prairie, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.
He was born March 30, 1921, to Alex and Marie (Meiner) Bock in Truman. He graduated from Truman High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army from July 1942 to November 1945. He was stationed at Camp Barkley in Abilene, Texas; Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. and New Guinea in the South Pacific.
On Dec. 16, 1945, he married Arlene Kettner in Truman.
He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating from the School of Dentistry in May 1952. Dr. Bock practiced dentistry in Blooming Prairie from September 1952 until his retirement in November 1988.
He served on the city council, the school board and First Lutheran Church Council. An avid birder, he enjoyed bowling and playing golf and was innovative in establishing the golf course at Blooming Prairie Country Club.
Survivors include wife, Arlene, Blooming Prairie; daughters, Susan (Bruce) Johnson, Farmington; Valerie Cover, Eagan; two grandchildren; sister, Amanda Reinke, Truman; brothers, Harold Bock, Truman; Richard Bock, Minneapolis; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lu7ella Swenson; brothers, Albert, Rudolph, Arnold and Rueben.
Visitation: One hour before the service.
Service: 11 a.m. memorial service, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at First Lutheran Church.
Interment: First Lutheran Cemetery.

Duane F. Horan, 80
Duane Francis Horan, 80, of Albert Lea, formerly of Ellendale, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center, Albert Lea.
He was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Jackson, to John and Amelia (Unteidt) Horan. He graduated from Freeborn High School in 1940. He was a Golden Gloves boxer from 1941 to 1944. After high school he worked on a farm with his future wife's father. Horan married Corrine Bartness July 14, 1944, in Hartland.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. He was a steeplejack in the midwest and southern states. In the 1950s his family moved to Ellendale.
Horan worked for Northern Valley Packing Corporation, AMPI and retired from Viking Chemical.
Horan raised and trained horses, belonged to the rough rider saddle club and rode in the Grand National Rodeo Parade. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with family.
He is survived by sons, Delane (Dorrie) Horan, Hollandale; Randy (Cindy) Horan, Austin; Ricky (Audrey) Horan, Ellendale; daughters, Linda Peterson, Blooming Prairie; LaRae (Gary) Hansen, Blooming Prairie; Teri (Jerry) Finke, Northwood, Iowa; Cynthia (Curt) Esplan, Blooming Prairie; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Merle Horan, Verndale; sister, Jean Anderson, Geneva.
He was preceeded in death by his wife and parents.
Visitation: Was 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service today.
Service: Was 11 a.m. today, at Community Lutheran Church, Geneva with the Rev. Joel Xavier officiating.
Internment: Hartland Cemetery.

Oswald William Asper, 88
Oswald William Asper, 88, of Deer River died Sunday, October 27, 2002 at Deer River Health Care Center.
He was born April 16, 1914 in Austin, Minn., to Bennie and Mattie (Rogers) Asper.
He attend school in the Adams, Minn. area and went to work for the Hormel Foods Corp. in July of 1936. He was married to Bernice Rogers on January 21, 1939 at Austin.
During WWII he served in the US Coast Guard.
He returned to Austin and worked at the Hormel Company until retiring on September 30, 1976.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Moose Club.
Following his wife’s death, he moved to St. Cloud in 1984 and to Deer River in 2001.
He enjoyed woodworking and hunting, but was an avid Muskie fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, brothers Bernard and Art Asper and Sisters Ruth MacNamara and Alice Krokus.
Funeral services will be held Thursday October 31, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with The Rev. Don Deines officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, with Austin Post #91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 VFW in charge of military rites. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at the church for one hour before the service. Casket bearers will be Scott Merten, Dr. Chuck Thompson, Adrian Sequin, Randy Kuechle, Chad Meinert, Jay Asper, David Vos and Paul Kieffer.
He was survived by sons and daughters-in-law: Roger and Joy Asper of Deer River, MN, Robert and Sally Jo Asper of Hollalldale, MN; granddaughters and husbands, Stacy and Dr. Charles Thompson of Sartell, MN, Shauna and Adrian Seguin of Sartell, MN, Maria and Randall Kuechle of Grand Rapids, MN, Carey and Chad Meinert of St. Cloud, MN, Nicole and David Vos of Minneapolis, MN; Grandsons and wives, Scott and Denise Merten of Hollandale, MN, Jay and Missi Asper of Sauk Rapids, MN, Great-grandchildren, Trent, Madison and Carson Thompson, Avery and Tatum Seguin, Rebecca and Amanda Kuechle, Quinn Meinert, Preston Merten, Samantha, Chandler, Maggie, and Libby Asper; sisters, Myrtle Bliton of Peoria, AZ, Irene Hurd of Austin, TX, Madiline Cockrum of Anaheim, CA; brothers, Harold Asper of Eastsound, WA, Morry and Eva Asper of Sun City, CA, Bill Asper of Yerington, NV, Myron and Gloria Asper of Shakopee, MN; nieces and nephews.
Bernyce E. Peterson, 83
Bernyce E. Peterson, 83, of Blooming Prairie, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Prairie Manor, Blooming Prairie.
She was born Dec. 20, 1918, to Gustav H. Vaith and Mabel C. Jesperson in rural Steele County.
On Oct. 15, 1941, she married Helmer Peterson at First Lutheran Church parsonage.
A lifelong resident of the Blooming Prairie area, Bernyce enjoyed her garden and roses, sightseeing trips with her husband and spending time with her daughter and grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church and her church circle.
Survivors include husband, Helmer, Blooming Prairie; daughter, Janelle O'Leary, Austin; two grandchildren; relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Gary; parents; and brother, Wallace.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., today, Oct. 29, 2002, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.
Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church with the Revs. Richard Hegal and Heidi Heimgartner co-officiating.
Interment: First Lutheran Cemetery.

Jennie Beise, 95
Jennie Beise, 95, of Stewartville died Sunday October 27, 2002, at Stewartville Care Center.
She was born August 12, 1907, in rural Grundy Center, Iowa.
She grew up on the family farm in Plesant Valley Township and attended school in Racine.
She worked as a nanny for the Dr. Waltman Walters family in Rochester until her marriage.
On October 12, 1933, she married Arthur Beise at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plesant Valley Township.
The couple farmed in Plesant Valley Township until moving to Stewartville in 1965.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a sunday school teacher. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, it's womens society and the Stewartville Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, gardening and was an avid reader.
Survivors include daughter Arlyss Beise, Stewartville; brothers Elwin Ottjes, rural Grand Meadow, Ernest (Marion) Ottjes, rural Stewartville; sister Edna Holland, Austin; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, a daughter, five sisters and a brother.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., today, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville with the Rev. Lyle Fritsch and the Rev. Dr. David Preuss officiating.
Interment: Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Plesant Valley Township.

Bruce R. Andrews, 85
Bruce Robert Andrews, 85, of Austin, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002.
He was born Dec. 21, 1916, to William and Hattie (Hurd) Andrews in Blue Earth, Minn.
He attended school in Blue Earth and grew up on the farm where he was the younger of 13 children.
On Oct. 1, 1938, he married Evelyn Irene Severtson in Sioux Falls, S.D. They were married for 62 wonderful years. Evelyn died on April 7, 2000.
Mr. Andrews belonged to St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
He was employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Co. and also ran the bonded gas station in Austin. Later he worked for Lysne Construction.
Bruce enjoyed working outdoors, feeding the animals and also playing bingo and spending time with his family -- a five generation family.
Dad/Grandpa had a good story to tell and a smile for everyone. He loved playing his harmonica and enjoyed cars -- especially his red convertible he had long ago.
Survivors include five daughters, all from Austin: Patricia Andrews, Sandy (John) Carroll, Bonnie (Dean) Britt, Cheryl (Jim) Epley, Sheila (Robert) Helmers; eight grandchildren: Terri (Brian) Cambern, Julie (Michael) Diaz, Steven Carroll (Renae), John Karnes Jr., Sheri Day (Juan), Angela (Gentry) Black, Valerie Helmers, Shelly Epley; 11 great-grandchildren: Corey and Jennifer Cambern, Liah and Jamie Day, Chelsea and Travis Hatfield, Dakota Ferch, Justas Martin, Levi Black, Timmy Carroll, Alexcis Escandon; one great-great-grandson: Dylan Ricken; one sister, Bernice Thorton of Minneapolis; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; five infant children, five brothers and six sisters.
Pallbearers are Brian Cambern, Corey Cambern, Steven Carroll, Terry Day, Gentry Black and Michael Diaz.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday (today) at Worlein Funeral Home and at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday.
Services: Funeral services will be held at St. Olaf Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Austin.
Ione V. Rud, 73
Ione V. Rud, 73, formerly of Austin, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, at the Sauer Memorial Nursing Home in Winona.
She was born February 2, 1929 in Decorah, Iowa to Arthur and Louise (Barth) Kraby.
On September 3,1948 she married Junior Burdette Rud in Austin.
She owned and operated Star Liquor from January 1, 1980 to 1996.
Survivors include sons Rodney (Cindy) Rud, Faribault, Randall (Faith) Rud, Winona, Russell Rud, Austin; daughter Rhonda (Dean) Graner, Kellogg; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister Mae Gieske, Austin; brother DuWayne (Betty) Kraby, The Villages, Fla.; brother-in-law Albert Diggins, Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Robert Kraby and sister Arlene Diggins.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Service: 11 a.m., Thursday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kris Wee officiating.
