Betty M. Johnson, 83

Betty Mae Johnson, 83, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Austin, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Largo Medical Center, Largo, Fla.

She was born July 4, 1919, to Emil and Grace (Strange) Hanson in Chatfield, where she attended school.

She worked for Burr Oak Manor for 10 years and for J.C. Penney. She was an avid Twins fan, enjoyed sports in general, reading, grandchildren, her cats, card games and gardening.

Survivors include sons, Robert (Sue) Johnson, Minot, N.D.; Donald (Judy) Johnson, Waseca; David Johnson, Austin; daughters, Janet (Marcus) Siewert, Lake City; Janice Tucker, Largo, Fla.; Phyllis McAlister, Faribault; Barbara (Bill) Richards, Barlett, Ill.; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Emil Hanson, Chatfield; Morris (LaVonne) Hanson, Chatfield; sisters, Burdilla Hanson, Chatfield; twin sister, Beth Murphy, Annandale; Dorothy (Wilbert) Schneider, Albert Lea.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Curtis; grandson, Bryan Tucker.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m., Saturday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Kristin K. Wee officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin

Marie E. Tomhave, 84

Marie Ellen Skifton-Feil-Tomhave, age 84, of Austin, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Caledonia, Minn., to Magnus and Annabelle (Lutz) Skifton. She attended school and was married to Norman Feil on March 8, 1938, in Caledonia, Minn. Following Norman's death Marie worked as a waitress in a number of area restaurants, was employed at the Weyerhauser Co and Regner's Dry Cleaners. She was married to John Tomhave on April 22, 1972, in Austin.

Marie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Austin and the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed flowers, embroidery, shopping, doll collecting and spending time with her family. Marie was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Norman Feil and John Tomhave; grandsons, Thomas Burgess and Eric Roberts; three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church (WELS) 2103 Eighth Street SW, Austin with the Rev. Bob Seifert officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church for one hour before the service on Saturday.

Marie is survived by children: LeRoy and Sharon Feil of Watertown, S.D., Sharon and Don Burgess of Austin, Minn., Susan and Jerry Hennricks of Farmington, Minn., Sheila Roberts of Edina, Minn., Tinka and Jon Nelson of Rochester, Minn., Margie and Gary George of Red Wing, Minn., Bobby Jo and Ron Kraft of Austin, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister: Violet Otterness of Waconia, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Glenn W. Shawback, 83

Glenn Wilbur Shawback, age 83, of Waltham, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 15, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Preston, Minn. He was born March 13, 1919, in Waltham, Minn., the son of Arthur and Clara (Foster) Shawback. He attended school in Waltham and completed further mechanical training in Brownsdale.

He worked on the family farm in Waltham and in trucking and mechanical occupations before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He trained in Texas at Pampa Army Airfield in aircraft maintenance and operations, supervising 300 ground crewmen. Glenn served six months in the Asian Pacific Theatre flying between India and China. He separated from the Air Corps as a Master Sergeant and was awarded the Theatre service, Victory, and Good Conduct medals.

On Nov. 10, 1946, Glenn was united in marriage to Lillian Marie Waldo in Glenville, Minn. They made their home in Waltham where Glenn established the Shawback Garage, providing automobile sales and repair for 50 years at the same location. He also farmed the family property and his own property until 1996. Lillian died on Nov. 8, 1990. He was remarried on Aug. 24, 1991, in Rochester to Nancy Craig and later divorced.

Glenn was a member of the Hayfield American Legion Post for 55 years.

He entered the Good Samaritan Center in Preston in May of 2002.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn (Jerry) McBrearty of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jerry, Jr. and Elizabeth McBrearty; two brothers, Harry Shawback of Seattle, Wash. and Donald (Mary Ann) Shawback of Lewisburg, Pa.; three sisters, Donna Cameron of rural Waltham, Ilene (Reginald) Santos of Brazil and Ellen (Jim) Gibson of Melbourne, Fla.; and many other relatives and friends.

His parents; a brother, Milton Shawback; and a sister, Wilma Shawback, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Waltham with Rev John Heruth officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Post. There will be no visitation or reviewal. The Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is handling arrangements for the family.

Laurina A. E. Perau, 89

Laurina Augusta Emma Steinberg Perau, 89, of Osage, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

She was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Rock Township, to Emil and Selma (Wilde) Steinberg. She was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Rock Township on Dec. 15, 1912, and confessed her faith in Confirmation on May 29, 1927.

On Nov. 15, 1936, she married Orlan Perau at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. They lived on a farm southwest of Osage and had two children.

Laurina enjoyed gardening, flowers, family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include daughter, Margaret (Paul) Hegland, Osage, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Edwin (Maxine) Steinberg, St. Ansgar, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orlan, in 1988; daughter, Marlys.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating.

Interment: Osage Cemetery.

Stella Wambeam, 88

Stella Wambeam, 88, of Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Prairie Manor Nursing Home, Blooming Prairie.

She was born Aug. 31, 1914, to Ross and Effie (Tummore) Eckert near Otranto, Iowa.

On Oct. 8, 1932, she married Russell L. Wambeam. The couple farmed in Iowa until moving to Austin in 1940. They eventually bought a farm near Austin. They had four children.

Stella became a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in 1951. She belonged to a neighborhood group, a project group and made ceramics.

Russell died in 1991 after 59 years of marriage. Stella then moved into Austin where she lived until November of 2000 when she moved to Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.

She loved cooking, baking, canning and crocheting.

Survivors include children, Dr. Russell (Margaret) Wambeam, Jr., Laramie, Wyo.; Rodger (Judy) Wambeam, Austin; Alcienne (Charles) Madison, Maple Grove; Dellene (Steve) Schwart, Austin; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Lillian Johnson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; brother, Jason Eckert, Sr., Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; brothers, Clarence, Shirley and Bill; sisters, Valyda and Ruth.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

Interment: Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle.

Lawrence W. Grinolds, 85

The funeral service for Lawrence "Lorny" W. Grinolds, of Bancroft Creek Estates, Albert Lea, formerly of Glenville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Glenville. Pastor Dianne E. Ciesluk will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville. Military honors will be accorded. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Lorny died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea. He was 85.

He was born on July 8, 1917, in Minnesota Lake, Minn., the son of Clair and Susan (Gillson) Grinolds.

Lorny moved with his family to Albert Lea in 1927, where he attended Ramsey School and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1936. He played for Albert Lea in the Minnesota State High School Basketball Tournament in 1936. After graduation he worked for Mier Wolf and Sons and Bailey Electric in Albert Lea until entering the service in 1943.

Lorny served our country in the Navy during World War II on the USS Anthedon, a submarine tender. He returned from the service to resume work at Baileys Electric until 1957 when he became associated with Gilpin Insurance Agency. He later became manager of Americana Insurance Agency in Alden until retiring in 1983.

On Sept. 22, 1940, Lawrence was united in marriage to Anne Pacovsky at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea.

He had served on the Freeborn County Planning Commission, been active in the Glenville Boosters, and had been inducted into the Freeborn County Softball Hall of Fame.

Lorny was a member of the Elks, American Legion Post #264, and lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was also a member of the Zurah Shrine Temple, a Past Master of Western Star Lodge #26 A.F. & A.M. and Past Patron of the Halcyon Chapter #21 Order of the Eastern Star.

Lorny is survived by his son, Richard "Dick" Grinolds of Minneapolis; brother, Everett Grinolds and his wife Gloria of Albert Lea; sister-in-law, Marvelyn Grinolds of Albert Lea; special niece, Lorna Lajcik of Palatine, Ill.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives, and close friends and neighbors, the Tom Belshan and Tim Kaasa families of Glenville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anne; his son, Lawrence "Larry" Grinolds Jr.; brothers, Manly and Dale Grinolds; half-sister, Lou Kurth; and half-brother, Elvin Hochstein.
