GM, L-O eliminated
The Grand Meadow volleyball team did not make it easy for Spring Grove, but the Superlarks ended up falling short of advancing to the next round of the Section 1A tournament by losing to Lions, 15-11, 15-11, 15-11.
Nickole Stier had seven kills and Cassie Denisen donated five kills in the loss. Sarah Holm had seven assists, while Kelli Petzel contributed five points in the match -- Grand Meadow's last. The Superlarks ended the year 5-18 overall.
Elgin-Millville, the second-seed of the East Sub-Section, knocked off LeRoy-Ostrander in three straight, 15-4, 15-7, 15-9. The Cardinals ended their season at 9-19 overall.
Ashley Swancutt paced L-O with 11 kills and four service aces in her final career match. Maggie Payne and Brittany Bunne, both seniors, scored seven kills in the loss. Senior setter Andrea Jennings gave out 25 assists.
Brittany Schroeder contributed a team-high six aces in the match.
"Elgin-Millville was a very good team, they were too much for us," said L-O coach Ron Prigge. "The kids were nervous at first but they settled in. Elgin-Millville has a lot of star players that improve each time they play."
Elgin-Millville meets Spring Grove in Saturday's second round at 6 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Arena.
