Packers sink Iowan opponents

The downside to a trip to Charles City, Iowa, for the Austin girls' swimming team was that not everyone on the roster got to compete. The upside of the event was that the Packers dominated.

AHS swam laps around Charles City and Decorah, Iowa, in taking first place at the three-team meet Monday night. The Packers totaled 171 points after winning every event and taking second in seven of 12.

Each team had two competitors in every event, and only once did Austin have a fourth-place finish. The second Packer swimmer in every event finished second or third in 11 of 12.

Host Charles City topped out with three second-place finishes en route to second place as a team. Decorah had one second-place finish and just two third-place efforts.

Stacy Bjorlie and Lauren Goettsch each charted a pair of first-place individual performances. Bjorlie won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle, and she anchored the 200 freestyle relay's victory in the next event.

Goettsch won the 50 and 100 freestyle, anchored for the winning 200 medley relay and opened for the 200 free relay. Amanda Martin was second to Goettsch in both sprints, in addition to swimming on both freestyle relays.

Danielle Chapek and Jori Baldus swept the top two diving spots, while Nicole Novak and Cassie Srock followed with a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly.

Lindsay Lukes returned to win the 200 freestyle and was second to Bjorlie in the 500. Chrissy Srock was second in the 200 free and the 100 breaststroke. Cassie Srock prevailed in the breaststroke, while Beth Goskesen edged teammate Briana Walsh for first in the 100 backstroke.

Austin, now 4-2 overall, returns to Big Nine Conference action Thursday night at home against Owatonna. The Packers are 2-1 in the Big Nine.
