Richard S. Brown, 86
Richard S. Brown, 86, of Albert Lea, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Home, Albert Lea.
He was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Omaha, Neb., to Campbell D. and Christine Helene (Schaab) Brown.
On July 12, 1948, he married Ellen Jean Schumacher.
Richard was manager for the Hormel Corporation for 44 years. He was a University of Nebraska graduate, a World War II Army Captain and a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves. He was also a longtime member of the Austin Country Club, Elks Club and the American Legion.
Survivors include wife, Ellen Jean Brown, Albert Lea; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Joy Brown, Blaine; Timothy and Mary Brown, Mosinee, Wis.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie Brown and Thomas Johnson, St. Paul; 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Brown.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., tonight, Sept. 13, 2002, with a 7 p.m. wake service at the funeral home and Saturday at the church for one hour before the service.
Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

Keith E. Howden, 70
Keith E. Howden, 70 years old, of 21054 Ave. #196, Strathmore, CA 93267, formerly of Brownsdale, born Dec. 12, 1931, on the Phillips-Howden family farm, died Sept. 11, 2002, of ALS in Visalia, Calif.
Keith attended grade school at the Phillips District 129 for eight years. He graduated from Austin High School in 1949. He joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War.
He married Bertha Harms and they had four children: Denise (Kimball), Phillip Howden, Brenda (Martinez) and Janette (Gallia). The family moved from Northrup, Minn. to Strathmore, Calif. in 1965. The couple later divorced and Keith then married Phyllis Reeves. He helped raise her four children: Debra (Gill), Lori (Cornacchia), Mike Reeves and Shari (Kritsch). Together they had 23 grandchildren.
Keith worked for 35 years for the Citrus Sales Co.
He attended the Living Word Fellowship Church and sang solos until November when his voice gave out from the ALS.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at his church in Porterville, Calif.
Survivors include wife, Phyllis; six daughters and two sons; 23 grandchildren; sister, Inez Vietor of Austin, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Lulu Howden; sister, Madeline Sorensen; brother, Ira J. Howden; baby brother, Dean Howden; grandparents, William and Inez Phillips.
