Stephen R. Fleming, 52
On July 15, 2002, at 10:30 p.m., our father, Stephen R. Fleming left this world to be joined with his mother Catherine, brother Timothy and sister Marybeth Fleming in heaven. Stephen R. Fleming passed away at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. He was 52.
Stephen was born on Aug. 26, 1949, in Kittanning, Pa., to Jack Fleming and Catherine (Gill) Fleming. His family moved to Austin, Minn., where his father worked for the Hormel Corp. and Steve followed the football games of the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota Gophers.
Steve was a 1967 graduate of Austin Pacelli High School, proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1971. Stephen first traveled to Fairbanks in 1975 where he joined up with a longtime friend to this day, Dean Zuelsdorf. His initial hesitation to move to Fairbanks from Green Bay, Wis. quickly turned to love and enjoyment of the people of Alaska.
Steve was a faithful U.S. Postal Service letter carrier for 27 years. He loved delivering his Cushman Street business route and joking with business owners and employees he regarded as friends. Steve was a longtime member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Steve was an avid sports fan and enjoyed many years of playing organized baseball in Fairbanks. He loved moose hunting and spending time with his family at their cabin on the Salcha River.
Steve truly loved and cherished his two children. He was so proud of Derek for his service in the U.S. Army and Dawnelle for giving him his first grandson, Deondric. Steve was truly loved and cherished in return and will never be forgotten. He will always be in our hearts.
Steve is survived by his son Derek Anthony Fleming; his daughter Dawnelle Nicole Fleming; grandson Deondric Henderson, all of Fairbanks; his father Jack Fleming; sisters, Kathy Dunklee, Susie Fruncillo and Bert Kiemle, all from the Minneapolis area; sister Joanne Mann of Fairfax, Calif.; and by numerous friends and members of the Spencer family who will fondly keep him in their hearts.
