Fifth-rated Grand Meadow gallops past Lyle/Pacelli, 49-6

Grand Meadow's passing game is a work-in-progress, but its running attack is anything but.

The Superlarks intended to apply its passing attack against Lyle/Pacelli Friday night, but the fifth-rated team in 9-man football found out the running game might be game enough. The 'Larks pounded out 405 rushing yards en route to a 49-6 rout of visiting L/P Friday in Grand Meadow.

Kyle Breitbarth completed two touchdown passes in the first quarter and Lyle/Pacelli never got its own rushing attack on target in their second loss in as many weeks. Breitbarth only played one half but racked up 109 yards rushing on just eight carries.

"We really focused on coming out and trying to throw the ball a lot more," said Grand Meadow coach Gary Sloan. "We only threw 10 times, but most of them were early."

Breitbarth connected with Tyler Knutson on Grand Meadow's second play from scrimmage for a 31-yard touchdown pass and Lyle/Pacelli was never able to catch up. Chris Bergstrom, who racked up 279 yards rushing in week one, was limited to 18 yards on 15 carries.

"We were very effective at (stopping Bergstrom) tonight," Coach Sloan said. "We set a goal to shut him down and we did."

Kellen Blaser led Lyle/Pacelli's offense with 84 yards rushing, 78 of which came on L/P's only touchdown with 3:11 to play in the game.

Grand Meadow outgained L/P 506-133 in total offense, stemming from a Superlark defense that allowed only three first downs. Grand Meadow punted only once and did not commit a turnover.

"Overall I really didn't think we played very well in the first half, some people were maybe looking down the road a little too early," Sloan said. The Superlarks face arch-rival LeRoy-Ostrander, the top-rated team in last week's poll, at LeRoy this week. "We looked a lot crisper coming off the ball at the start of the third quarter."

Lyle/Pacelli's quarterbacking corps of Joey Greibrok and Jake Kaput were a combined 2-for-12 passing for 20 yards. Chad Doocy picked off a pass for one takeaway, and Craig Petzel had a fumble recovery for another.

Lyle/Pacelli hosts Nicollet, who most coaches in the SCC picked to be near the top of the league, Friday night in Lyle.
