Chamber to host political forum

General Election Day is six weeks away, but the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce wants to help voters make up their minds early.

The Chamber will sponsor a Candidates Forum for Mower County office-seekers Saturday, beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Holiday Inn of Austin.

Mower County Commissioner candidates will be featured, beginning 8 a.m. followed by county sheriff candidates and then county attorney candidates.

The marathon affair is expected to last at least three hours and includes candidates without opposition.

The list of potential forum participants includes David Hillier, 3rd District incumbent; Len Miller, 4th District incumbent, and challenger Dick Lang; Garry Ellingson, 5th District incumbent, and challenger Harry Willmott.

Mower County Sheriff candidates include Terese Amazi and Todd Clennon.

Mower County Attorney candidates include Patrick A. Oman, incumbent, and Patrick W. Flanagan.

Other county candidates, including Woody Vereide, unopposed incumbent, and Susan Davis, unopposed recorder, were not listed as forum participants.

Neither were Doug Groh and Lynn Koch, candidates for Mower County Treasurer, or any of the Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District commissioner candidates.

According to Sandy Forstner, Chamber executive director, the forum will focus on business issues and is open to member of the organization, employees and guests.

Tickets are $15 per person. The deadline to make a reservation is Friday.
