Adeline Staples, 84

Adeline (Balentine) Sumner Staples, 84, of Browns-dale, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at her home.

She was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Webster City, Iowa, to Roy and Gladys (Matthews) Balentine.

She attended school in Alden, Iowa, graduating in 1935.

On June 13, 1938, she married Roy Sumner in Webster City, Iowa. They farmed in that area until moving to Brownsdale in 1948 where they farmed until Roy's death on June 14, 1953.

Adeline worked at Olson's Corner Grocery until she married Clarence Staples in 1956 and moved to Stewartville. They later divorced and Adeline moved to Brownsdale where she worked as a meat wrapper at Brownsdale Meat Locker.

A member of Brownsdale United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School and was active in the women's circles.

She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, embroidering, watching birds, playing cards, puzzle books, spending time with her grandchildren and traveling.

Survivors include son, Larry (Bonnie) Sumner, Waltham; daughters, Rita (Robert) Luthe, Brownsdale; Marla (Robert) Ohm, Sparta, Wis.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Roy (Mary) Balentine, Alden, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husbands.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., today, Aug. 22, 2002, at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, at Brownsdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Hodak officiating. Casket bearers will be Kari Arndt, Teri Sunderman, Kraig Luthe, Kirk Luthe, Adam Ohm and Landon Ohm.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Brownsdale.

Melvin Waller, 82

Melvin Waller, 82, of Rochester, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Bear Creek Care Center, Rochester.

He was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Midule, Saskatchewan, to Albert and Anna (Knutson) Waller.

On Dec. 1, 1962, he married Jean Lemons in Mankato. She died in 1992.

Melvin was an Army Veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge in Germany.

He moved to Rochester from Lanesboro in 1953 and moved to the Bear Creek Care Center in February 2002. He worked for Doyle Connor Construction in Rochester from 1959 until 1975.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Senior Citizens Center, American Legion and VFW.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include sons, Gerald (Cheryl) Waller, Dodge Center; Mat (Melissa) Waller, Rochester; Ted (Tammy) Waller, Oronoco; Dale Waller, Damariscotta, Maine; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, Aug. 22, 2002, at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Douglas J. Gits officiating.

Interment: Grandview Memorial Gardens with military rites by American Legion Post 92.

Larry William McClain, 59

Larry William McClain, 59, of Austin, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Muse Norris Inpatient Unit.

He was born Oct. 6, 1942, in Albert Lea, to Silas W. and Amy (Gettis) McClain.

He graduated from the Forest City High School in 1960 and attended the Mason City Junior College.

He worked as a boiler operator at Wilson and Farmland Foods in Albert Lea and more recently for Hormel Foods in Austin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Austin and the Elks Club.

Survivors include children, Lisa Ann Cox and Federiko Rendon, Austin; Dorothy Kennelly, Dewey, Okla.; Douglas Reinken, Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother, Amy Jamtgaard, Mason City, Iowa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Rodney Carlson, Clear Lake, Iowa; Louanna and Steve Lahner, Clear Lake, Iowa; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., today, Aug. 22, 2002, at the funeral home and Friday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, at First Baptist Church in Austin with Pastor R. Allan Flint officiating.

Interment: Oakland Cemetery, Forest City, Iowa.
