Blossoms top Jayhawks

Blooming Prairie got its first win of the new season by toppling Madelia-Truman at home, 34-25. In a closely matched game, the Blossoms, who only trailed once at the very beginning of the game, relied on their offensive and defensive lines to control the momentum of the game.

Madelia-Truman scored first on a 5-yard run from Jayhawk running back Cody Toothaker. The drive was capped off by a kicked extra point.

Blooming Prairie answered back with its first possession in the second quarter with an 18-yard touchdown throw from Kraig Olson to David Kramer. A Steve Salinas run made the score 8-7 and put the Blossoms on top to stay.

During their next possession, Jay Salinas took a hand off from Olson and ran 20 yards into the end zone and after a failed pass attempt, the Blossom lead increased to 14-7. But the Jayhawks answered back with a 68-yard pass from quarterback Mark Jacobs to receiver Mychal Johnson to narrow the margin to 13-14.

A 5-yard run by Jay Salinas into the Jayhawks end zone and a failed point after attempt made the score at halftime 20-13.

Madella-Truman drew the first blood after the break on a 28-yard Toothaker run; a failed extra point pass play conversion made the score 19-20, But Blooming Prairie punched the ball into the end zone with its next two possessions, first on a 20-yard Steve Salinas run, next on a Olson to receiver Derek Ingvalson 15-yard pass. The Jayhawks only scored once more, on a Andy Forstner 3-yard run.

Blossom head coach Chad Gimbel summarized the game by saying "both sides of the line played well tonight; that allowed us to control the ball."
