Parade kicks off celebration

It was a sight to behold.
Twenty-seven people carried an American flag through the streets of Austin during the start of Thursday's annual July 4 parade.
And as the flag approached each street corner, each onlooker didn't hesitate
Some put their hands on their hearts. Others cried.
But everyone stood in unison.
"It almost made your hair stand up on end," said Austin's Paul Everson.
It was evident that patriotism was indeed the theme of the parade. And the audience didn't mind one bit.
"I have noticed a lot more red, white and blue than usual, which is good," noted Scott Bicell of Austin.
The parade was filled with floats, go-carts, marching bands and fire trucks. But nearly every entry had a flag or some sort of red, white and blue mixture, reminding folks of our nation's birthday.
"One of my biggest thoughts is that we should have a lot of respect for our veterans," said Austin's Cassie Walker, when asked to comment on all of the patriotic colors on display. "Of course, you think of Sept. 11 and the unity that's come in this country. You have to think of all the heroes, those who have died and those who are still with us."
But it was the oversized flag that seemed to be on everyone's mind.
"That was huge. It was something to see, as far as community-wise. They should do more of that, as far as all of the parades," Bicell said.
And the flag spoke in different ways to those in attendance.
"It represents our freedom," Everson said. "It kind of makes you feel pretty lucky and proud to be in a country like this."
