Man injured after fall from tree

ELKTON -- Steven E. Guy, 50 of Elkton, remains hospitalized in serious condition after falling from a tree Monday.
According to a Mower County Sheriff's Department report, Guy fell between 25 and 30 feet from a tree at a rural Elkton residence
The mishap occurred 12:44 p.m. Monday, according to the Sheriff's Department report.
The Mayo One air ambulance was dispatched to the rural residence and Guy was transported from the scene to St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester for treatment of his injuries.
Drugs found in man's shoe
Casey J. DeVriendt, 21 of Austin, attempted to hide drugs in his shoe.
It didn't work.
According to an Austin Police Department report,
DeVriendt and a passenger were stopped
at 3:06 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of 4th Street Northwest.
DeVriendt was made to get out of the car and a search was begun using a canine unit.
While the search was made, the suspect fidgeted on his feet, according to the report, and officers examined his socks and shoes.
When police examined his tennis shoes and socks, they discovered a quantity of methamphetamine in a plastic baggie.
Police charged DeVriendt with felony possession of a controlled substance for the methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, no proof of insurance and having no working taillight.
According to Austin police, charges of driving while intoxicated are pending the results of blood/urine tests.
No charges were filed against DeVriendt's companion.
Traffic stop for speeding recovers stolen vehicle
A traffic stop by an Austin police officer netted a stolen vehicle Saturday night.
According to an Austin Police Department report, an officer on routine patrol clocked a vehicle traveling 43 miles per hour and stopped the car.
The vehicle also had no rear license plate and only an AutoNetics
dealer placard.
The driver, identified as Jonell Devon Dowdell, 20 of Austin, originally told police, he bought the car from AutoNetics and had a signed purchase agreement at home with his mother's co-signature.
A passenger in the vehicle, Juan Cordova, 18 if Austin, confirmed the Dowdell story.
However, the officer further interrogated the pair and Cordova confessed he took the key to the vehicle at AutoNetics earlier Saturday. Later that day, he and Dowdell returned and took the car, according to the report.
A check with the auto dealer confirmed the car had not been purchased by Dowdell or Cordova.
Guns stolen, found
Robert F. Ford reported a quantity of guns stolen from his place of business.
According to an Austin Police Department report, Ford
reported the theft occurred sometime over the weekend.
Thieves pried open a gun safe at Ford's Image Builders headquarters at 310 3rd Ave. SE and took
shotguns and rifles, plus a large quantity of ammunition.
Also, desks and file cabinets in the office were rifled by the thieves, according to the police report.
In another gun incident, Dennis R. Schminke reported he found three guns in a boat in his garage.
According to an Austin Police Department report, Schminke planned to leave on vacation and went into his
northwest Austin garage and discovered two shotguns and an assault rifle in his boat.
The discovery was made 3:40 p.m. Saturday and Schminke turned the weapons over to police.
Public safety meeting tonight
A public safety meeting is scheduled tonight for all citizens of Austin.
According to Police Chief Paul M. Philipp, the 6:30 p.m. meeting in the council chambers at Austin Municipal Building is for all citizens of Austin.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss forming neighborhood watch programs to aid local police and keep neighborhoods safe.
Austin First Ward Council Member Mickey Jorgenson has been instrumental in calling the pubic safety meeting for citizens.
