Greyhounds get tripped

A long trip was not a bountiful one for the Class B Austin Greyhounds, who fell 3-2 in a non-league game at Eau Claire, Wisc., Tuesday night.
The host Cavaliers went ahead 2-1 on Nick Johnson's home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Eau Claire added a much-needed insurance run in the sixth.
The Greyhounds (22-11) scored two unearned runs off of Eau Claire starter David Haehnel, who struck out seven and walked four in the complete-game victory.
Garrett Swank and Matt Raso teamed up to account for both Austin runs. Swank and Raso hit back-to-back singles in the second, and an errant pickoff attempt at third allowed Swank to score what was then the go-ahead run.
Swank doubled to start things in the seventh, and a throwing error on Raso's grounder to the shortstop gave Swank the opportunity to score from second.
Scott Meyer took the loss for the 'Hounds, allowing two earned runs on five hits through five innings. He struck out three.
Nick Dolan tossed the final three innings, allowing three hits, one walk and one earned run. He also struck out three Cavalier batters.
"We played somewhat shorthanded, but it was a fun game," said Greyhounds' player/coach Joe Serratore. "Their guy threw pretty well."
The Greyhounds are off until Friday, when they host the Austin Tournament at Marcusen Park. The original eight-team field has since lost one -- St. Charles has dropped out -- and the updated tournament schedule has not yet been released. The new tournament schedule will be determined before Thursday.
