For the last three years the Windom 4-H Club members have volunteered their time at Austin's annual downtown July festivities. This year’s Freedom Fest was no exception, with the club running the miniature golf course that is so popular with folks of all ages. The club members take turns running the golf course in two-hour shifts. Friday found Emily Berg, the president of the Windom 4-H Club and her friend Molly Auron on the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift.
"The Windom 4-H Club has members from in town. We rent the miniature golf course each year. This is our biggest fundraiser we have. We use the money raised to plant flowers where Burr Oak Manor used to be located. The money raised also goes for supplies and we donate a portion to the Humane Society each year," said Emily.
Emily has been in the Windom 4-H Club for four years. She plans on having several projects ready for the Mower County Fair this year. Emily will show vegetables and she is not sure about what she will be doing for a creative art project.
The Windom 4-H Club has quite a large membership and they meet once a month at the 4-H building at the Mower County Fair grounds. Their leaders are Dorrain Graff and Sunny Flink.
Parents were on hand to help out with the running of the miniature golf course. One parent was Kim Patterson, whose daughter Molly is in 4-H. Patterson's sons Caleb and Carter were having a good time on the course hitting golf balls.
Patterson said, "This is the best fundraiser for our club. We are able to raise around $600 in the three days we run the miniature golf course. We help pay expenses for young adults in our club to take a trip to Washington D.C with some of this funding and if they need money to go to the state fair. This is really a great fundraiser for our club."
