Alvina Bertha Schmeling, 95

Alvina Bertha Schmeling, 95, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

She was born May 27, 1907, in Dodge County, Minnesota, to John and Maria (Karstens) Kording.

She attended teacher training school in Dodge Center normal school.

She was a life long resident of Hayfield and was a teacher in District 76.

She was married to Arthur Schmeling on June 21, 1930, in rural Hayfield.

She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and belonged to the Women’s Circles.

She was a volunteer at Field Crest Care Center and loved gardening, rug making, sewing and quilting.

Survivors include daughters, Carolyn McDonald, Rochester, Arlene Draeger, Mantorville, Arlys (Ronald) Filley, Waltham; son, Lynn Schmeling, Blooming Prairie; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two brothers and six sisters.

Visitation: 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, June 9, 2002 at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Service: 1 p.m., Monday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield with Reverend Stephan Sandness officiating.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield.

Lilly Nelson, 91

Lilly Nelson, 91, of Blooming Prairie, died Friday, June 07, 2002 at Prairie Manor.

She was born April 21, 1911 in Cisco, Illinois to Carl and Betty (Pearson) Monson.

She moved with her parents to Sweden when she was 9 years old.

She attended school for one year there and then moved with her parents to Osnabrock, North Dakota.

She married Nels Einar Nelson on June 4, 1928 in Montana.

In 1942 they bought a farm near Osnabrock, where they lived until moving to Blooming Prairie in 1995.

She was a member of Dovre Lutheran Church, Osnabrock, N.D. where she was a member of WELCA.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens and a volunteer at the Nursing Home.

She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends, crocheting, embroidery, and playing Scrabble.

Survivors include daughters Clara (Kenneth) Meyer, Lyle, Betty (Laurel) Thoreson, West Fargo, N.D., Amy (Arlen) Olson, Milaca; son Rev. Paul (JoAnn) Nelson, Owatonna; sister Irene Eide, Williston, N.D.; brother Arthur (Shirley) Monson, Osnabrock, N.D.; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at the funeral home; 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, and one hour before services at the church.

Service: 2 p.m., Saturday, at Dovre Lutheran Church, Onsabrock, N.D., with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.

Interment: Union Cemetery, Osnabrock.
