Robert Marvin Qual, 78

Robert Marvin Qual, 78, of Austin, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Comforcare Nursing Home, Austin.

He was born April 6, 1924, in Wigdahl, to Martin J. Qual and Clara Johanna Dahl.

He graduated from Grand Forks High School in Grand Forks, N.D., and Union Business College in Grand Forks.

During World War II, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific where he survived the sinking of two ships in the battle for the Philippines. He received a Purple Heart and eight battle stars.

In 1950, he married Alice Redmon at Oak Park Lutheran Church in Clearbrook.

He managed creameries in Northern Minnesota and

owned and operated Quality Pest Control and Quality Lawns in Austin. After retiring, he drove the van for St. Mark's Lutheran Home and worked at the YMCA.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, on the board of directors of Grandview Cemetery Association, an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and ARC Mower County.

He was an avid golfer and amateur artist.

Survivors include wife, Alice; children, Leslie (Maria) Qual, St. Augustine, Fla.; Nancy Qual, Austin; Catherine (Gary) Stypula, Boulder, Colo.; Shirley (Mark Bearss) Qual, Mahtomedi; Susan (Tim) Nixon, Hudson, Wis.; five grandchildren; sister, Virginia (Stuart) Austin, Pequot Lakes; sister-in-law, Hazel Wyman, Barre, Mass.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jim.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, June 24, 2002, at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m., Tuesday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 91 and the VFW.

Jerry W. Kurina, 58

Jerry W. Kurina, 58, of Tampa, Fla., died Friday, June 21, 2002, of colon and liver cancer.

Lieu-tenant Colonel Kurina served 22 years in the Air Force and retired at McDill Air Force Base on July 1, 1988. He spent the last eight years teaching math at Hillsborough CC.

An avid runner, he was a regular at road races in the Tampa area for the last 15 years.

Survivors include wife, Barbara; parents, Tony and Delores Kurina, Austin; sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel; Thomas and Erika; one grandson.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m., today, June 24, 2002, at the funeral home.

Service: 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Incarnation Catholic Church in Tampa, Fla.

Interment: Florida National Cemetery with full military honors.

Julia C. Peterson, 90

Julia C. Peterson, 90, of Osseo, formerly of Austin, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at North Memorial Medical Center, Robbins-dale.

She was born Dec. 21, 1911, to Holver and Clara (Lestrud) Halvorson, in Moscow, where she grew up.

On May 12, 1930, she married Francis Peterson.

Julia lived in Austin until 1974, when she moved to Buffalo. She later moved to New Hope where she remained until December 1998, when she moved into the Brookshire Residence in Osseo.

She is a past member of Grace Lutheran Church, Austin. She was a volunteer at the Salvation Army.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Bert Johnson, Brainerd; son, Lavern Peterson, Elk River; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, in April 1968; seven brothers; two sisters.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at funeral home with the Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Organist will be Mary Lou Rysavy and soloist will be CeCe Kroc. Casket bearers will be Jeff Rolschau, Paul Meskan, Bert Johnson, Arden Magnuson and Danny Peterson.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery, Austin.
