Library still offering computer classes

For some, formal computer classes taught by an aspiring Bill Gates can be somewhat daunting.
However, in today's world, almost everyone needs to know how to use a computer or surf the Internet. To give everyone a chance to learn, the Austin Public Library has been offering computer classes, taught by librarians, for the past couple of months and has three planned for June.
Community services librarian Maggie Snow says the classes were started because "we saw a need out there, and it's also part of the library's mission for life-long learning. We want everybody to have equitable access to these resources, whether it's in print or on-line."
So far, sessions have included an introduction to the Internet, a guide to using Yahoo! e-mail and directions on how to use the library's catalog. A class on how to use a mouse was even given because "in some of the other classes, we noticed there were some people who were at the very beginning stage of using computers," Snow explains.
This month, classes include "Read and Click," which is a class for children 4 to 7 years old and their caregivers and will teach people about language and literacy while using the PBS Kids Web site.
An introduction to the Internet also will be offered, as will an introduction to word processing, which will teach people the basics of Microsoft Word.
Snow says the classes have generated positive feedback from students, who range in age from teenagers to seniors.
Though the library will continue to offer classes, specific topics haven't been decided yet. "We're open to suggestions. If it's not something one of the librarians can teach, then we'll be sure to find someone who can," Snow said. She adds they hope to begin offering advanced classes on surfing the Internet and using word processing programs in the near future.
"I think there is a real potential for the lab to be used in different ways," she says. "It can be used to teach literacy skills, to teach parents how to use resources to read and learn. People can print business cards or their Christmas newsletters from our computers. We have some really neat resources on these computers."
"Read and Click" will be offered 6:30-7:30 p.m., June 10. Call 433-2391, ext. 305 for more information or to register. "Introduction to the Internet" will be offered at noon on June 11 and "Introduction to Word Processing" will be offered at 7 p.m., June 18. For more information or to register for either of those classes, call 433-2391, ext. 317.
