Dairy Days was a great time

It's hard to imagine anybody could get choked up about an Adams Dairy Days celebration, but that's exactly what happened to Gary Harrison Sunday.
It was Mr. Harrison's last Dairy Days celebration as a member of the Adams Police Department.
Before retirement, he served Adams for 20 years and was protecting and serving the community for the last time over the weekend.
Nobody moves faster than "Shadow," when it comes to the wild scramble for candy tossed by parade entries. At least, nobody in his age group.
The world's greatest waitress, the one and only Bubbles, was there. Dressed in her familiar black and white outfit, Janet Heller walked the entire parade route in high-heel shoes, proving once again the Holstein Lady is indomitable.
Larry and Joanne Croker, Adams' favorite couple, delayed a vacation to be grand marshals of the parade, riding in the backseat of their convertible. (Please keep your wisecracks to yourselves unless the ink is dry on your Southland High School diploma.)
The Original Green Team was there. Gary and Cindy Ziegler, plus Cory and Colleen, loaned me one of their Oliver tractors for the Mower County Fair tractor pull last August.
Took home a third-place trophy and didn't strip the gears on the Zieglers' tractor.
Speaking of pulls, I did not compete in this year's cow milking contest. It's time to pass the torch and milk bucket to somebody else.
Besides, everybody knows the contest is rigged. Good grief … this year they let the Mower County Dairy Princess bring her own cow. If that ain't reason enough for a Congressional investigation, I don't know what is.
When I was a world-class cow milker, I preferred a Reinartz Holstein myself.
It was fun at Adams City Park Sunday afternoon. My girlfriend let me enjoy a little leg …
a turkey drumstick, that is.
Curt Heimer, took time from his softball team, to emcee the cow calling and husband calling contests.
Harvey Heimer gave it a go after Cristy Sathre tried her best. Dave Weness and Lynn Sathre showed how they call cows home for milking. Even Rose Corwin, daughter of Robin and Bob, yelled her best. In the end, the winner was the legendary Pat Smith, 80, who won the contest.
He's been milking cows for a living longer than anybody around and had his wife, Marcella, and 400 or 500 members of the Smith family cheering him to victory.
Pat is the last of the Smith brothers. Willie, Paul and Roy have died, so the win was fitting.
With the Smith clan watching, another member of the family, Mary Meyers won the husband calling contest. She uses a little sugar to get husband, Mark, when she needs him.
Meanwhile, Sue Finbraaten and her sister, Maureen Noterman, scared the wits out of most men in the audience calling their hubbies, Mike and Ed, respectively.
Barb Sprandel took a turn singing karaoke. She and husband, Don, are as close as it comes to professional karaoke singers.
But, this was Adams, so my favorites were two of the Golombowski kids, Sue and Maureen, singing Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe."
All in all, the Adams Dairy Days Committee put on a great show.
