Verley, Wurst lead BPHS boys in New Richland

Kyle Verley completed the sweep of the sprints and Andrew Wurst won both long distance races as the Blooming Prairie boys’ track team took first place at the Gopher Conference meet Thursday in New Richland.
Verley made good on the hat trick by winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events, while Wurst earned conference titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Verley clocked in at 11.4 seconds to win the 100, and later broke the tape in 55.3 in the 400. Three events later Verley finished the 200 in 23.7.
Steven Salinas won the 110-meter high hurdles and Nich Bass topped the field in the discus throw to highlight the Blossoms’ run to the championship.
Blooming Prairie finished with 196 team points. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown was a distant second with 130, while host NRHEG came in third at 109.
Luke Nelson trailed only Wurst in the 1,600, while Gary Tashima placed second behind Verley in the 400. Nelson also placed third in the 800 and ran the second leg of BP’s second-placed 4×400-relay team.
Eric Habberstad finished second in both the long jump and the triple jump, while Salinas came in second in the high jump and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Habberstad was third in both hurdling races.
Jon Vogt placed second in the pole vault and was on the third-placed 4×100 relay team.
