Top-seeded Blossoms upset by Goodhue

Top-seeded Blooming Prairie scraped together four runs off seven hits, but the sixth-seeded Goodhue Wildcats were not to be outdone in a 6-4 Goodhue victory in the Section 1A West Sub-Section championship baseball game Monday at Marcusen Park in Austin.

The Blossoms got seven strikeouts from starting pitcher Steve Seykora (7-2), but the Wildcats tallied eight hits and five earned runs in the not-so-surprising upset win. Despite their sixth-seeding and a lackluster overall record, Goodhue was favored by many West Sub-Section coaches to make it to and perhaps win the finals.

"Goodhue's a good team, hopefully tomorrow we can bounce back and get that second place," Blossom coach Chris Staloch said. "Our boys have bounced back all year, they'll battle. It should be an interesting game tomorrow night."

Blooming Prairie (15-5) will play the winner of the Glenville-Emmons versus LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow contest. G-E and LOGM re-ignite the Southeast Conference rivalry tonight at 5 p.m. at Marcusen Park, and Blooming Prairie will face the winner afterwards.

Only the Sub-Section champion -- Goodhue -- and the runner-up team advance to the Section 1A tournament, which starts Saturday at Hudson Field in Rochester.

Goodhue's Troy Stehr went the distance for the Wildcats' win, striking out seven.

Lynn Chheang, Aaron McDonald and David Kramer each had two of Blooming Prairie's seven total hits, and Tom Farr added the other. Seykora, despite being held hitless, led the Blossoms with two RBIs. Ryan Klemmensen and McDonald each drove in a run.

Staying alive

Glenville-Emmons and LOGM each advanced into the losers' bracket semifinals with wins Monday as well. Saturday's round of play was postponed due to poor field conditions, but a light rain through the area Monday did not aid the field for the afternoon games. G-E defeated Southland 7-1, while LOGM downed Medford.

G-E's Mitch Meier went the distance for the pitching victory, scattering four hits and one run over the seven-inning affair. Zach Stratton suffered the Southland pitching defeat, surrendering seven runs in five-plus innings. Adam Nagele pitched the final two innings in relief.

Derek Berndt had two of Southland's four hits in the Rebels' final game of the season. Southland finished the year 10-11 overall, going 1-2 in the postseason.

Isaiah Parry, Nick Flatness and Matt Learn all had RBIs for Glenville-Emmons, who play LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow today at 5 p.m. at Marcusen Park.
