The chance for Southland to finish the season with an above-.500 record fell to the wayside with a doubleheader loss to Caledonia Friday night in Adams.
The Rebel baseball team ended the regular season 9-9 overall heading into Section 1A action, which begins Tuesday in Austin. Southland, the fourth-seeded team, plays fifth-seeded Medford in the first round at 5 p.m. at Riverland Community College.
Caledonia chased Southland to the end of Friday's doubleheader, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth in game two to tie the score at 3-all. The Warriors pieced together three straight hits in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep 4-3.
Caledonia won the first game 5-0, fueled by the complete-game pitching effort of Casey Meiners and a two-run homer by Kevin Meiners. Casey Meiners allowed five Southland hits in the shutout. Zach Stratton suffered the loss for the Rebels, allowing two runs in the fourth inning and Meiners' two-run homer to highlight a three-run fifth.
Adam Landherr led Southland with two of the team's five hits.
Southland led 3-0 in the second game, stealing the early lead with three runs in the top of the first. Nate Bergene and Stratton walked to lead off, and Jared Gilles followed with an RBI-single. Travis Schneider added another run-scoring single, and Landherr drove in the third run with a groundout.
Landherr went 5 1/3 innings, while Adam Nagele was tagged for the loss for one inning of relief. Nagele got one out in the bottom of the seventh before surrendering back-to-back-to-back singles.
