Richard F. Berg, 77
Richard F. Berg, 77, of Austin, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Blooming Prairie, to Arnold and Caroline (Sorbo) Berg. He graduated from Bricelyn High School.
He served in the United States Army, 25th Infantry, from June 1943 to January 1946 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He earned an Asiatic/Pacific Theater service ribbon, a Philippines Liberation ribbon and the Purple Heart.
On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Ella Zrucky in Austin.
Richard worked as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Austin until his retirement in 1979.
He was a longtime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was a trustee and on the church council.
He enjoyed spending time with family, riding bike and watching sports, especially Vikings football and Twins baseball. In earlier years, he had played and coached local youth baseball teams.
Survivors include wife, Ella Berg, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cindy Berg, Golden Valley; Robert Berg and Konnie LeMay, Duluth; Steven and Lori Berg, Lakeville; three granddaughters; sister, Violet Jones, Chippewa Falls, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arnold, Frank and George; sister, Garnet; father-in-law and mother in-law, Frank and Augusta Zrucky.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at the funeral home and today at the church for one hour before the service.
Service: 11 a.m., today, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Don Deines officiating.
Interment: Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
