Lyle/Pacelli played a round-robin tournament in place of Saturday's regularly scheduled Hayfield Softball Invitational, splitting games against the host Vikings and Zumbrota-Mazeppa Monday afternoon.
Lyle/Pacelli lost its first game against Hayfield 4-0 in a match-up in which the girls really never got into the game. Amy Bickler threw the first three innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three, while Susie Rayman pitched the final two innings, giving up one earned run and striking out one. Bickler got the loss.
"The girls just came out flat and played with no enthusiasm," said L/P coach Tom Clements. "They made some mental mistakes that ended up costing us."
The second game, however, was another story. Lyle/Pacelli mustered seven runs on nine hits to defeat Zumbrota-Mazeppa by the score of 7-0.
Bickler made up for the first outing by pitching a complete-game shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out four. It was Bickler's ninth shutout of the season.
Bickler punished the Cougars with her hitting also, going 2-3 with a first-inning triple and a third-inning solo home run. Rayman hit a home run in the second inning. The rest of the team added their hitting and baserunning skills to contribute to the win.
"I'm really happy with the way the girls came back in the second game," Coach Clements said. "The team performed very well against Zumbrota. These are two tough division AA schools that demand a certain amount of respect. You have to play your best game against them."
Lyle/Pacelli is now 16-2 overall and 15-1 in the conference, and starts Sub-Section 1A softball play with a bye. L/P received the top seed ahead of Blooming Prairie (11-4).
Sub-Section 1A play starts Thursday at Todd Park in Austin, with first-round games slated for 5 p.m. Lyle/Pacelli will open Saturday against the winner of the Randolph/Goodhue matchup.
