LeRoy-Ostrander senior Erin Dohlman will be making her unprecedented third straight trip to the Class A state golf tournament after finising second individually at the Section 1 girls' golf meet Tuesday at The Oaks Golf Club in Hayfield.
Hayfield senior Kristen Frydenlund used her knowledge of her home course to qualify for state as well, making her first appearance at the season-ending meet. Frydenlund and teammate Molly McCamy both qualified for the Section finals for the second year in a row, but only Frydenlund will continue her final season for two more days. Hayfield seventh-grader Lisa Frydenlund also reached the Section finals, but did not advance after finishing 42nd overall.
Blooming Prairie freshman Calla Swenson splashed onto the local prep golf scene with a third-place finish at Sections, qualifying for the season-ending meet as well.
The Class A girls' golf meet runs June 5-6 at Izatys Golf Courses in Onamia. The girls play 18 holes each day on The Sanctuary course, while the boys' meet is played at Black Brook. No area boys' golfers qualified for state this season.
Dohlman chased Rochester Lourdes sophomore Staci Smoot for the second consecutive season as well, finishing second to the top-tier Eagles golfer by three strokes. Smoot shot 77 with Dohlman close behind with an 80. Swenson carded an 83 to take a comfortable third-place finish, with Frydenlund tying Fillmore Central's Alyssa Christianson for fourth with a 90.
Lyle/Pacelli's Sammi Jones was just outside the top five in hopes of advancing to state for the second consecutive season, tying two other golfers for sixth individually with a 92. Jones' second-day score of 50 did not register well into her chances of advancing.
Boys blanked at Sections
Lyle/Pacelli's Jamie Knutson and the Southland/Grand Meadow boys' team could not duplicate their feats from Sub-Sections, as neither advanced to the state meet.
S/GM senior Jeff Thalberg, who reached state individually last season, could not lead his team back as a tough team section saw S/GM finish fourth as a team.
Knutson, who won the Sub-Section tournament in Adams last week, fell short in Tuesday's Section 1A meet. He placed tied for 10th overall with an 81. S/GM's Gary Kiefer was right behind in a two-way tie for 16th at 82, while Blooming Prairie's Steven Busho was next with an 83. Thalberg carded an 85 and A.J. Wiste, an S/GM freshman, shot 86.
