In times of belt tightening, many budgets that receive state and federal funding are trying to figure out how to obtain items from different sources.

With education, it's definitely no different.

That's why it's good to see groups like the the Austin Education Foundation making a difference in the lives of students and teachers in local schools.

For 12 years, the foundation has given money for projects that benefit students in public schools. During this time, $125,000 has been doled out, and $25,000 has been given out this year. The money will help fund 18 different projects.

Sometimes, there's items that benefit students that the school district's may not be able to afford. An extra basketball hoop. Reading materials. A TV and VCR. Almanacs and guides.

Thanks to the efforts of the Austin Education Foundation, items like these were purchased for the benefit of students.

We applaud the foundation for its vision and insight, and hope it continues its mission for years to come.
