Erin Dohlman scored up a storm and Jeff Thalberg played 36 consistent holes of golf as both won respective sides of the Southeast Conference meet Friday and Saturday.
Dohlman, a two-time Class A state qualifier from LeRoy-Ostrander carded four birdies and scored 39s on the back nine each day to take the top spot in the girls’ competition. Dohlman shot 43-39-82 at The Oaks in Hayfield on Friday, and followed it up with a 44-39-83 at Ramsey Golf Course near Austin Saturday.
Thalberg, Southland/Grand Meadow’s defending state qualifier, birdied just once in 36 holes while winning the boys’ competition by one stroke over rival Brad Dybing of Lanesboro. Dybing shot a 4-over par 76 at Hayfield Friday to lead Thalberg by six strokes, but Thalberg bested Dybing by seven shots at Ramsey to take the league crown.
The top 11 golfers for both boys and girls were honored as All-Conference golfers. Southland/Grand Meadow’s boys placed four members in the top 11, as did Lyle/Pacelli. Jamie Knutson, L/P’s lone Section 1A qualifier from a year ago, placed third overall, while Tyler Fett, Tom Kluczny and Mark Van Winter all joined Knutson in the top eight.
&uot;We’ve come on,&uot; said Lyle/Pacelli coach Mark Buntje. &uot;We’re playing the best we’ve played all year. We’ve come a long ways.&uot;
Kluczny’s 91 at The Oaks Friday was his worst round of the year, but he rebounded with an 11-over 83 on day two. Mark Van Winter’s second-day score of 85 was his season-best.
Shawn Pfeil earned All-SEC honorable mention honors for Lyle/Pacelli after shooting a two-day total of 186, while Kyle Fett was not far behind with a 189.
Pfeil’s round was highlighted by an eagle-3 on the 10th hole at Hayfield Friday, while LeRoy-Ostrander senior Erick Anderson also birdied the same hole en route to his honorable mention status.
Gary and Eric Kiefer and A.J. Wiste were S/GM’s other All-Conference golfers. Eric Kiefer tied Glenville-Emmons’ Tyler Klingson for the 11th and final spot and won the position outright on the second hole of sudden death play. Senior Caleb Stroup was an honorable mention selection, shooting 184. The All-Conference cut-off was at 178.
Thalberg’s only birdie came 31 holes into the two-day event, scoring a two on the par-3 13th hole at Ramsey Saturday afternoon. Thalberg shot a 3-over 38 on the front nine to move into a tie with Dybing at the top of the leaderboard, and his only birdie of the tournament moved him ahead by one stroke.
Dohlman rolls on
L-O’s Dohlman finished 1-over on par fives and 2-over on par threes while easing to the SEC crown in the girls’ competition. Caledonia/Spring Grove’s Jacquelyn Hauser gave chase, thanks to an eagle-2 on the par-4 8th at Ramsey, and finished eight shots back of Dohlman.
Dohlman was a combined 5-over on the back nines, shooting 82-83-165. She accounted for four of the nine birdies scored in girls’ competition. Hauser had the only eagle.
Lyle/Pacelli’s Sammi Jones took third in the conference, shooting 86-94-180. Southland/Grand Meadow’s Cathy Schneider was 21st overall, while teammate Charlotte Retterath was 26th. Laura Christopherson came in 23rd for L/P.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams for Southland/Grand Meadow, Lyle/Pacelli and LeRoy-Ostrander begin Sub-Section 1A golf today at Cedar River Country Club in Adams.
