Austin's Adam Plotts was four strokes shy of earning tournament medalist honors, but the Packer team was 33 shots out of first in finishing 12th of 14 teams at the Hutchinson Invitational Friday at Crow River Country Club.

A large cast of Metro schools dominated the team standings, led by Wayzata's first-place total of 308. Eastview finished second with 314 and Glencoe-Silver Lake was third at 319.

Austin shot a 341 to finish ahead of Richfield and Hutchinson's 'gold' squad, led by Plotts' 7-over par round of 38-40--78.

"Adam had a better round in him, it was just some close putts that pushed him four back from medalist honors," said Packer coach Corey Haugen. "There was at least four holes where he lipped out his putts."

Jon Bain and Troy Hoefflin chipped in with 85 and 86 respectively, and Ben Meyer's 92 rounded out the team scoring.

"It was a beautiful day for golf, I don't know what to say," Haugen suggested. "We thought today was going to be our day to put some sub-80 scores in the books. We are definitely ready to break out of this slump.

"Adam is setting the pace for us, we just need to follow suit. I continue to see talent in this team, we just need to put it all together and perform well together."

Austin was scheduled to play Saturday at the Fairmont Invitational, but results of that were not available at press time.

Southland/Grand Meadow repeats as SEC champions

The Southland/Grand Meadow boys golf team successfully defended their title as Southeast Conference champions when they bested Glenville-Emmons, 160-180 at Cedar River Country Club in Adams on Friday.

The match was highlighted by brothers Gary and Eric Kiefer, who both carded a 2-over par 39, allowing them to share meet medalist honors. Jeff Thalberg was one shot behind the medalists shooting a 40, and A.J. Wiste came in two shots back of Thalberg at 42.

"I'm real pleased how the boys have played this year. I am very happy for them," said Southland/Grand Meadow coach Wayne Robertson.

The top scorer for Glenville-Emmons was Matt Webb shooting a 44. Tyler Klingson and Kris Knutson both scored a 45, and Dustin Rayman carded a 46.

This win improves Southland/Grand Meadow's overall record to 13-1 and a perfect 7-0 in the West Division of the Southeast Conference.

S/GM will now turn their attention towards the Triton Tournament on Monday at Hidden Creek Golf Course near Owatonna. The tournament will host 10 boys' and eight girls' teams.

Results:

SOUTHLAND/GRAND MEADOW (160) -- Gary Kiefer 39, Eric Kiefer 39, Jeff Thalberg 40, A.J. Wiste 42.

GLENVILLE-EMMONS (180) -- Matt Webb 44, Tyler Klingson 45, Kris Knutson 45, Dustin Rayman 46.

Lyle/Pacelli improves on the links

Tom Kluczny shot a 1-over par round of 37 and teammate Jamie Knutson carded a 3-over 39 in leading Lyle/Pacelli to a 164-194 Southeast Conference victory over host LeRoy-Ostrander Friday at Cedar River Country Club in Adams.

L/P moved its season record to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference with only one league dual left. Southland/Grand Meadow, undefeated in SEC play, hosts L/P Tuesday at Cedar River.

"We can't win the conference, but maybe we could give them a loss," said L/P coach Mark Buntje. "The kids sense we're really coming on. Tom and Jamie are really playing well right now, and the other kids, they're really playing better.

"We've basically got eight or nine kids who could be in the top six.

Lyle/Pacelli's team score of 164 was clearly the best in Buntje's years as head coach. The team travels to the Chaska Town Course Monday for a 10-team invitational at 11 a.m.

"We're just going to go up there and try and make a respectable showing," Coach Buntje said. Buntje's cousin is the coach for the Chaska boys, opening the window for Lyle/Pacelli to get into an event with a major Metro presence.

Kyle Fett shot a 43 and Mark Van Winter's 45 rounded out Lyle/Pacelli's scoring efforts. LeRoy-Ostrander's lone senior, Erick Anderson, led the Cardinals with a 45.

In girls' golf, LeRoy-Ostrander's Erin Dohlman -- a two-time state qualifier -- edged Lyle/Pacelli junior Sammi Jones for medalist honors. Dohlman carded a 43 to take the top spot, while Jones tallied a 47. L/P's girls' team ran its record to 1-4 in the SEC with the team win.
