The team sections seemed only to be a prelude to the end of the season for the Austin boys' tennis team. The Packers were eliminated from postseason play Thursday night after the Section meet at Rochester Mayo.

Austin's top two singles and doubles tandems ran into some of the best competition around, falling in all four matches to complete the 2002 campaign. Mike Binder and Andy Sundahl were doused in the singles competition, while doubles duos of Jesse Morgan and Jim Reetz, and Mike Cavanaugh and Tucker Schieck were shot down in close matches.

At No. 2 doubles, Cavanaugh and Schieck were defeated in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, by the Lakeville pair Cole Johnson and Jake Wendorff. Morgan and Reetz got knocked out of the top doubles flight by Forrest Roffel and Brice Delling, 6-1, 7-5.

"All four Austin teams played well," said first-year coach Mark Cavanaugh. "The competition was very good, but I was happy with the improvement that I saw with the guys. Being the last month of the year they played well, we're looking forward to next year.

Binder was dropped in straight sets by Mayo's top singles player, Phillip Loprinzi, 6-0, 6-0. Sundahl was defeated 6-2, 6-1, by Lakeville's Pat Curren.
