Southland/Grand Meadow takes two from Hayfield

State golf qualifier Jeff Thalberg of Southland/Grand Meadow returned to the medalist stand for the first time this season, beating out teammate Eric Kiefer for the honor in S/GM's latest victory, a 168-177 non-conference dual win over Hayfield Thursday night at Cedar River Country Club in Adams.

Thalberg shot a 3-over par 39 to pace S/GM to the victory, their third in as many duals this season. Kiefer tied teammates Caleb Stroup and Bryan Peck for runner-up honors with 43s.

Josh Kvasnicka, Blake Swanson and Matthew Steele all scored 44 to lead Hayfield, and Andrew Heydt filled in with a 45 for the Vikings' final score.

Southland/Grand Meadow's girls' team toppled their Hayfield opponents for their first dual-meet win, scoring a 243-270 advantage. Hayfield did not travel with their full varsity lineup, but the win was no less sweeter for S/GM.

Charlotte Retterath crowned medalist honors with her round of 52, leading Southland/Grand Meadow to 1-2 overall this season. Cathy Schneider added a 58, Lindsay Viker chipped in a 62, and Megan Underdahl contributed a 71.

Chelsea Allen led the visiting Vikings with a 57, followed by a 62 from Lisa Frydenlund. Jerica Swain netted a 74 and Amy Johnson rounded out the scoring with a 77.

Southland/Grand Meadow hosts Lyle/Pacelli in a Southeast Conference dual Monday at Cedar River.
