Riverland starting to find its groove

The Riverland baseball team has overcome more than its share of adversity already this year.

The Blue Devils’ first-year head coach-to-be, Chris Jones, quit the position two months before the season was set to begin, leaving Riverland in a rut before any baseball was played.

His replacement, Austin native Dave Meyer — a minor league pitcher in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization — got one month to ready his team for this year.

Ten games into the season, all four wheels seem to be rolling in the right direction.

Riverland has won three in a row, including a sweep of MCCC foe North Hennepin Saturday in Austin. The Devils tallied 23 hits in the two-game rout, winning 11-4 and 12-6.

Derek Bonser and Sean Breslin combined for the victory in game one, getting help from home runs by Josh Kunze and Luke Larson. Breslin struck out seven and walked one for his first win of the season, allowing two hits over 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Nate Vollbrecht made an immediate impact in his first game back from a suspension, hitting two doubles and scoring twice.

John Roesler ran his record to 2-1 with a four-hitter in the nightcap, a 12-6 Riverland victory.

The Blue Devils scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Riverland benefitted from four hits and three Norsemen errors in the decisive inning.

North Hennepin had six errors in the second game and four in the first.

Jamie Morrison and Breslin each went 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kunze was 1-3 with two runs scored, and Brandon Tukua had his first hit of the season and later scored a run.

Riverland (4-6, 4-4) rescheduled Friday’s doubleheader at Anoka-Ramsey for today, starting at 2 p.m. The Devils host Minnesota West for a twinbill starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
