Rebels escape with two over Houston; BP bounces Medford

Southland escaped with a pair of one-run victories in taking a cross-conference doubleheader from guest Houston, 7-6 and 4-3, Thursday night in Adams.
Nate Bergene pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the save in game one, and then went the full eight innings for the extra-innings victory in the nightcap. Zach Stratton tossed 4 2/3 innings for the win in game one.
Adam Nagele fueled Southland's 14-hit attack in the opener, going 4-4 with an RBI. Steve Snyder, Adam Landherr and Chad Wilson each added two singles.
Jared Gilles had three singles and two RBIs in the nightcap, while Bergene and Brandon Dvergsteen added two hits apiece.
The Rebels (5-1) surrendered a run to Houston in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 2-2, and Southland scored twice in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. The Cyclones scored once in the bottom of the eighth and had runners on second and third with one out. Bergene forced an infield groundout and struck out the final batter for the win.
"It was two good wins for the kids, they really kept battling all night," said Southland coach Larry Luke.
Houston outhit Southland in the second game, 8-7, behind three hits from Adam Kimball's three-hit effort. Kimball had six of Houston's 16 hits in the twinbill.
The Rebels host LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow for a Southeast Conference doubleheader Monday in Adams. LOGM (4-2) split its SEC twinbill with Rushford-Peterson Thursday night. The Bulldogs lost the opener 9-5, but battled back with a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Blossoms rout Medford, 12-0
Lynn Chheang and Aaron McDonald each went 3-4 as the Blooming Prairie baseball team battered host Medford 12-0 in five innings Thursday night in Gopher Conference play.
Steve Seykora went four innings for the win, allowing just four hits and one walk against eight strikeouts. McDonald closed the game with two strikeouts in Medford's final at-bat.
Kraig Olson, Brayton Johnson and Ryan Klemmensen each added two hits for Blooming Prairie, who plays a non-conference game today at home against Hayfield at 4:30 p.m. Klemmensen had three RBIs to lead that category for the Blossoms. Johnson also drove in a pair.
