Bernard John May, 91

Bernard John May, 91, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

He was born Dec. 31, 1910, in Meyer, Iowa, to Henry J. and Anna M. (Hackenmiller) May.

On Nov. 15, 1938, he married Regina Anne Bissen in Johnsburg.

Bernard was a life long farmer in the Johnsburg area, retiring to Stacyville, Iowa in 1977. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in starting both the St. John's Council 3812 of Adams and the Marian Council 8650 of Stacyville, serving as Marian Council's First Grand Knight. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Jean Pierre Aluneau Assembly in Austin. He also helped with the organization and building of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, being an original board member and its first president. In addition, he served on the Stacyville Creamery Board. In his retirement years, he made many rosaries.

Survivors include wife, Regina, Stacyville, Iowa; children, Robert (Audrey) May, Stacyville, Iowa; Rita (Daniel) McCoy, Rochester; Carol (John) Sullivan, Osage, Iowa; Ann (Tom) Wolf, Sheffield, Iowa; Gerard (Janet) May, Osage, Iowa; Edward (Teresa) May, Stacyville, Iowa; Pamela (Richard) Fox, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mark (Rosanne) May, Adams; Catherine (Daniel) Moellenbeck, Granger; 27 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Dorothy) May, Rose Creek; Anthony May, Fond du Lac, Wis.; sisters, Elizabeth (Joseph) Martyniak, Taunton, Mass.; Olivia (Robert) Pitzen, Stacyville, Iowa; Evelyn (Ralph) Brumm, Osage, Iowa; sister-in-law, Irma May, Stacyville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John; brothers, Edmund, Othmar and Clement; sisters, Sister Margaret May and Dorothy May.

Visitation: 3:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the church with a 4 p.m. Rosary, a 7 p.m. Scripture Service and a 7:45 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, Iowa with Father Joseph Schneider officiating.

Interment: Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville, Iowa.

Naomi Verl Paulson, 66

Naomi Verl Paulson, 66, of Austin, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Lenora, to Floyd and Leona (Turner) Johnson.

She graduated from Austin High School in 1954 and was married to Hans Arthur Paulson, Jr. on April 11, 1959, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin.

Naomi was employed as a nursing assistant at Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home and Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin. She was a member of Crane Chapel.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Hans and Maryellen Paulson, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Christian and Julie Paulson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; three grandchildren; mother, Leona Goetsch, Austin; sisters and brother-in-law, Eva Mae Heffron, Austin; Joan and Jim Stowell, Austin; Janice Fischer, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; father, Samford Johnson; and brother, Robert Johnson.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, April 16, 2002, at the funeral home and on Wednesday for one hour before the service.

Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Petersen officiating. Organist will be Kathy Crosby and soloist will be the Rev. Randy Petersen

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Emily Kay (Engel) Howley, 93

Emily Kay (Engel) Howley, 93, of Hopkins, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1908, in Deerfield. She was a graduate of Winona State College and was a long-time resident of Austin.

Survivors include son, Eugene (Peggy) Howley, Kiawah Island, S.C.; daughters, Marilyn Mangano, Tiffin, Ohio; Kathleen Jacobson, Burnsville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Engel, Burnsville; sisters, Bernadine Geraghty, Kansas City, Mo.; Georgianna Duffy, Sun Lakes, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howley; and son, Thomas Howley.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Prior Lake.

Interment: 3 p.m. graveside service, Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Funeral Home: White Funeral Home, Lakeville.

Memorials: To St. Michael's Catholic Church, Prior Lake.

Phyllis E. Culton, 62

Phyllis E. Culton, 62, of Weyauwega, Wis., died Saturday, April 13, 2002, in Appleton, Wis.

She was born April 29, 1939, in Austin, to Richard and Inez (Christenson) Noble. She was a 1956 graduate of Austin High School and had attended Austin Junior College on a scholarship. She was a runner up in the Miss Austin Beauty Pageant and also belonged to a roller skating dance club.

On June 6, 1958, she married Gary D. Culton in Austin. He died on Dec. 20, 1997.

Phyllis was employed at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wis. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca, Wis.

Survivors include daughters, Renee (Jim) Vergauwen, Waupaca, Wis.; Aimee (Duane) Biely, Waupaca, Wis.; son, Richard Culton, Weyauwega, Wis.; seven grandchildren; sisters, Rosalie (Walter) Marjorowicz, Minneapolis; Marjorie (Harold) Queensland, Ostrander; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gary; and grandsons, Jonathan and Gary.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the funeral home and on Thursday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m., Thursday, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca, Wis. with the Rev. James Bump officiating.

Interment: Lakeside Memorial Park, Waupaca, Wis.

Benjamin J. Holgate Jr., 80

Benjamin J. Holgate Jr., 80, of Austin, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Albert Lea.

He was born Dec. 26, 1921, to Benjamin and Mary (Tracy) Holgate in Austin.

On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Shirley Schumacher in Austin.

Ben served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Holgate, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and David Lokker, Austin; sister, Joyce Hannaman, Galena, Ill.; brother-in-law, LeRoy Wollschlager, Austin; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Holgate; brother, Vern Holgate; sister, Emma Westmoreland.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002, with a 6 p.m. wake service and from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. Casket bearers will be Richard Holgate, Brian Holgate, Tom Holgate, Brad Clifford and Richard Epley.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.
