Rochester Mayo's strength in boys' tennis proved too much for the Austin Packers in a 7-0 Big Nine Conference loss at Mayo Tuesday afternoon in Rochester.

Austin was not able to take a set from the Spartans, who return most of their starting varsity lineup for this season.

"They have a very good team and they had a lot of players returning from last year's squad, and they're really tough," said Austin's first-year coach Matt Cavanaugh.

The No. 3 doubles tandem of Tyler Conway and Taylor Schieck came as close as the Packers could to winning a set, falling 6-4, 7-6 in the final match.

"That was by far our best match of the day," Coach Cavanaugh said. "The two freshman, Tyler and Taylor, fought til the very end, they showed that they really really were trying to win the match.

"They fought hard, and by far the bright spot of the match was watching Tyler and Taylor give it their all at the very end, and they almost forced a third set."

Luke Green and Jim Reetz battled as well, falling 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles bout.

The Packers (0-2) host Mankato East in a Big Nine dual Thursday at the Wescott Tennis Courts, and entertain Decorah, Iowa, for a non-confernce clash on Friday. Both duals start at 4:30 p.m.
