The Austin High School girls’ hockey team completed its season with its awards banquet last week, honoring 19 letterwinners as members of the Packer squad.

The Austin High School girls’ hockey team completed its season with its awards banquet last week, honoring 19 letterwinners as members of the Packer squad.

The Pack named its captains for next season, citing defenseman Jenny Nemitz and forward Brenda Nguyen with the honor. Forward Emily Quealy was named alternate captain. All three will be seniors next season.

Nemitz was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in addition to her All-Big Nine Conference award. Senior center Melissa Dickhut, also an All-Conference pick, was honored along with senior forward Jamie Heller with the Leadership Award.

Nguyen got the Hardest Worker award, while sophomore forward Courtney Hughes was the Top Gun with 24 goals and 10 assists for 34 points this season. Freshman defenseman Sara DeVries was honored as the Most Improved Player.

Hughes was also a member of the All-Big Nine team, with senior Lisa Snyder and sophomore Jessica Petersen getting to the honorable mention squad.

Heller highlighted the academic honors for Austin, garnering an All-Big Nine Scholar Athlete award. She also received the gold scholarship certificate for academics, and Snyder received silver. Quealy won the gold scholarship for the junior class, and Margaret Wagner, a junior forward, received the silver. Sophomore Andrea Petersen picked up the silver scholarship certificate as well.

Austin completed the season with a 12-12 record and a 7-9 mark in the Big Nine.
