Groups of third-graders attended school last week in a change of venue.

The 143-year-old Excelsior School House hosted the children throughout the week as they got a taste of the days of yesteryear.

It wasn’t all that long ago that rural country schools dotted the countryside. They were an important part in the lives of many people growing up.

The old school house on the grounds of the Mower County Fairgrounds and situated within the confines of the Mower County Historical Society’s exhibits in Austin is a gem in our community.

More students should have the opportunity to see how the past was. This finely restored exhibit offers a true taste of years gone by.

Many of the Banfield Elementary School third-graders who attended the school house last week dressed in period clothing, too, to add a little authenticity to the learning event.

More students need to take advantage of all the learning experiences our community offers. It takes people to make it happen – volunteers, parents and teachers. It’s a good thing for our youth.
