The Mower County attorney will be asked to unravel an apparent neighborhood dispute.
Austin police officers were called to an address on Fourth Ave. SE Tuesday, when a parent reported two children were struck by pellets from a BB gun. She identified the perpetrator to police.
The mother alleged the man fired a pellet gun at the juveniles, who cross his property to go to a bike trail in a wooded area between Jennings Scrapyard and railroad tracks and the residential area. Witnesses supported the allegations.
The suspect said he shot a paintball gun over the heads of the children to warn them to stay off the private property.
After discovering the area used by bicyclists and ATV-riding juveniles was his property, the man posted "no trespassing" signs, which were torn down by the juveniles and yelled at them only to be ignored, according to police reports.
Police saw evidence of paintball marks in the street, but did not see any superficial wounds from pellets on the two juveniles identified by a parent as victims of the shootings.
Tractor fire
DEXTER – Tim Frank was doing field work with a tractor when it caught afire Tuesday.
According to a Mower County Sheriff’s Department report, Frank was operating the tractor on the Frank Herman and Sons farm near Dexter.
Frank called for assistance and the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire at 8:44 a.m. Tuesday.
Dogs attack
LYLE – Loren Denisen reported he was attacked by two dogs Tuesday morning.
According to the Mower County Sheriff’s Department report, Denisen drove to a rural Lyle location to do field work Tuesday. When he attempted to leave his car and go to a tractor, two dogs attacked, forcing him back in his vehicle.
The dogs’ owners were identified and a deputy was sent to the owner’s residence to investigate.
When the deputy arrived, two dogs kept the peace officer from leaving his car and the owner was not at home.
Burglars interrupted
An alert Mower County Sheriff’s deputy interrupted a burglary in progress late Tuesday night.
A silent alarm went off at Carney’s Auto Salvage along U.S. Highway 218 North at 11:41 p.m. Tuesday.
A deputy in the area immediately responded and drove to the business. When he arrived and investigated, he discovered a man pretending to be sleeping in a car. With him was a portable radio.
Austin police officers arrived to assist the deputy and when the officers determined the man was part of a burglary team, they summoned his accomplices to surrender.
Two male juveniles, ages 15 and 16, from Blooming Prairie and Owatonna, came out of the salvage yard with portable radios and burglary tools.
All were taken into custody and jailed overnight. An 18-year-old Owatonna resident and the youths face burglary charges.
