Riverland Community College tennis had their season opener on Tuesday against Martin Luther College at the St. Peter-Gustavus Tennis Center.
The men’s tennis team started out with Jake Greenman losing two sets to Kevin Ehlke. The first game was 6-1 to 6-0. The second set scores were 6-3 and 7-6 and the tiebreaker was 8-6. Zach Olin won over Dan Olson 6-1 and 6-0 in singles
Scott Lennox won 6-3 in split sets and lost 2-6 against Josh Olson. The tie-breaker in the third set was won by Josh Olson 7-3. Ed Mjoen lost in a tough battle, 6-2 and 6-2, to Carl Volesky. Dave Handeland lost 6-1 and 5-3 over Mike Navatny. Eric Groselund won over Luther Tollefson, 6-1 and 6-3.
In doubles, Ulwelling and Greenman won 8-5 over Josh Olson and Dan Olson. Lenning and Hartman lost 3-8. Ed Mjoen and Handeland lost 6-8. The men lost 2-7 as a team to Martin Luther.
The women’s tennis team was short one player, Brooke Holets, and had to forfeit two games. They were supposed to play three doubles and had only five players.
Brooke Erichson lost 6-1 and 6-1. Hackbart played well and was filling in for Holets, but lost two singles, 6-3 and 6-4, to Lucy Templeton. Tina Knudsen lost 3-6 and 6-2 and then the tiebreaker was 5-7.
Alissa Goetzinger played her first game with the Riverland Blue Devils. She played five singles and lost 6-3 and 6-1. Nichole Brown in four singles won over Cindy Krause, 6-4 and 6-1. Erichson and Hackbart won in doubles 8-5. Tina Knudsen and Nicole Brown lost 6-8.
