William Sheely, owner of the campground, has applied for the modification of the wastewater treatment facility’s permit in Section 6, Marshall Township.

According to the MPCA, the permit is to construct and operate a new treatment facility designed to serve 280 camp sites, a central office, game room, snack bar, comfort center, shower facilities, laundry facilities and a duplex sanitary dump station.

The construction of the new wastewater treatment facility is part of a plan to replace the existing treatment facilities and to expand the total capacity of the system.

The modification concerns Sheely’s plans to relocate the system’s site and extend the compliance schedule.

Currently, the campground uses two separate septic tank/drainfield systems. The existing systems will be largely replaced and expanded resulting in a total treatment system consisting of four septic tanks with four standard in-ground trench systems and three septic tanks with a pressure mound treatment system.

In addition to the proposed new treatment sites, the owners will be required to set aside additional areas for further expansion of each of the treatment sites.

According to the MPCA, the new treatment facility will be capable of treating an average design flow of 15,000 gallons per day and a maximum design flow of 20,500 gallons per day.

If approved, the permit calls for compliance of three of the sites by June 30 and another site by Nov. 15.

Located along Interstate 90 east of Austin, Beaver Trails Campgrounds is accessed at the Elkton exit from the highway.

The deadline for public comment is April 23.
